Elon said "you've got to pick him so they don't take you out for real" per Isenstadt, who was the Trump camp approved biographer of the 2024 race

JD was already being heavily promoted to DJT through the conduits of Don Jr., Bongino and Tucker, among others. If Musk jumped on the JD bandwagon, he was already late to the party.

I have never heard Elon talk bout this in the dozen or so podcasts and interviews he has done.
He stated he had thought about maybe supporting Trump in 2024 but wasn't certain until Butler.
I believe he called Trump that night to tell him he was going public the next day.
Vance was already picked at that point, he got the call the day before Butler.

That pretty much debunks the rumor. I distinctly remember Elon not really being around Trump at all until after he endorsed Orange.

The implication is that if those who want to assassinate the President believe that the VP would be as bad or worse, then they would refrain from assassinating him.
