They find these yahoos but God Damn they blind and do not know the rules. Dont they have to go thru some kind of training before landing in a real game?

I like the umps that realize they aren’t perfect and give make-up calls. Some will just shaft one team the entire game, I’ve been on both sides of it.
They’re good people who love the game, but with the abuses they endure, it’s a tough way to make $50.

For high school softball in Texas, we have to pay
(1st game/2nd game)
1-30 miles $100/$80
31-60 miles $115/$80
61+ miles $130/$80
You should see my bill for our 100 school tournament (297 games x $160)

As someone who reffed soccer for about 10 years in my teens and 20s, I tried getting back into it recently to “give back” to the game. I'm one of those people who actually does take it seriously to do right by others. It took me about a month to just not give a shite anymore
- Players are flopping belligerent pussies
- Coaches are aholes to you even when you make the right call (and they know you made the right call)
- Parents are clueless aholes and should have been beaten more as children
There is no price you can pay me to put up with that anymore. My weekend and weeknight time is too valuable. Everyone’s a fricking child and I’m not interested in contributing to their being able to play a game. It's way more satisfying to just sleep in
There’s nationwide shortages of good referees in all sports for a reason. There’s no path to “upgrading” - the demand exceeds the supply
And it’s only going to get worse because today's kids/teens have even less interest in giving up their weekends for it. So there is no prayer of backfill. We're nowhere near the bottom of how bad it will get
If you want good referees, it's on you to be the change you seek in the world and sign up

If we need 8 umpires to cover a set of games, we might get 7.
At this point anyone who wants to officiate gets on the field immediately. Especially in low level travel ball and smaller high schools.
