Can be tough to grow in south Louisiana. Definitely have to keep them out of afternoon sun. Check out the LSU Ag link below.

Keep them on the north side of the house and they’ll be fine. Have 2 of them at my house and they look nice.

I have one on the east side of my house and it gets crispy by the end of summer. Does well though

There is a new cultivar called Acer Palmatum Baton Rouge, supposed to be very heat tolerant

Additionally, deep-fried maple leaves are a delicacy in Japanese cuisine.

I have one. Full sun and growing nicely. Beautiful tree. I’d snap a pic but may be too dark this evening
The Baton Rouge is on the right

I am not familiar with the baton rouge variety but sounds like a good option. Other than that one, the Bloodgood variety is the most heat and sun tolerant I have found. Either one needs to have moist soil. I've been using Forest Pansy Red Bud when I want a tree with maroon color and is a lot tougher than a JM.

The Baton Rouge was a sport found on a coral bark growing in the Houston area. It’s been propagated and proven to perform exceptionally well in the heat. Coral bark, green leaves

Plant them now through February so they can settle in before the heat. Waiting till spring is too late.

Thanks. Snagged 2 of them.
THREAD HIJACK...
The Southern Sugar Maple is recommended by LSU Ag for planting in Louisiana. Any idea where to find these and some that have some size? I'm striking out.
Thanks all.

Thanks, we were in the Smoky Mt.s before Halloween and went by their location . They were having an open house that weekend so we were able to check out the operation . Met the family and they are really nice folks. They did grab a Baton Rouge for us - and came home with 12 different trees

I got 2 also. I have a Sango currently, on the east side of my house. It does well. I’m thinking of putting this non my pool
Yard, which gets sun from 11-dark.
Any thoughts on if it can take it without significant leaf curl? Or should this variety still not be full afternoon sun?

We live north of Alexandria - zone 8b - and planted a Sango Kaku back in late March. It held up really well in mostly sun . We have about 2 1/2 acres that I mow and has many tall hardwood trees , so some partial filtered sun / shade . Sango Kaku is one of our healthiest looking trees . I planted the Baton Rouge in the same area . The Baton Rouge originated just north of Houston and is said to be extremely heat tolerant and good for full sun. Check out Mr Maple on YouTube for info on Baton Rouge. They are my source for research and wonderful family to deal with.

Doug Young Nursery in Forest Hill has Southern Sugar Maple listed in their catalog. Best to call first as in my experience on occasion they don’t have materials listed in their catalog in stock.
DYN Price Catalog page 23
One of the few wholesale nurseries that sell to the public, wholesale price plus sales tax.
Also, many large retail garden centers can order it for you, their suppliers will put it on the truck with their next delivery to the store - just speak to a manager.

Look for Caddo Maple, it's a variety of sugar maple.
