'This is not happening:' Inside the day LSU's William Schmidt rocked the baseball world

Sorry, it's behind a paywall (I think) because it's an Advocate story by Koki Riley.
A few excerpts:

A few excerpts:

William Schmidt woke up at 11:30 a.m. on July 14 not knowing what decision he'd make.
Would he become a professional baseball and potentially earn millions of dollars as a first-round MLB Draft pick? Or would he stay home and fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming an LSU baseball player?
Derek Curiel knew Schmidt for two years before they were roommates.
Curiel had already been recruiting Schmidt to stay at LSU before they had gotten to campus.
Schmidt suspected that's why LSU coach Jay Johnson paired them together as roommates. It turns out he was right.
"I watched him pitch at Catholic a couple of times and walked away like 'This is not happening,' " LSU baseball coach Johnson told the Baton Rouge Rotary Club in January. "Somebody's going to give this dude a lot of money and he's going to go."
"The next thing I know, two or three days before the draft Derek's texting me, like, 'Hey, I'm your ace recruiter. I got this,' " Johnson said. "This (roommate decision) turned out way better than I even thought it would."

Pretty insane he is at LSU and not in the pros.

Not sure what the downvotes are about. This is literally a website that allows you to read articles behind a paywall.

This year I’m excited to see him play the fireman role. Will be daunting for teams to have a chance and see a guy like him running to the bump to ruin dreams.

Schmidt and Curiel shouldn’t be at LSU but I’m thankful they are. This will make LSU and college baseball better.

I've heard that Konnor Griffin legitimately went down to the last day on deciding to sign with the Pirates.

Super excited that we get to watch him for 3 years.

Lends credence to the notion that SEC baseball is effectively the new Minor League...

Baseball benefits from NIL more than any other sport.

Now that NIL is available it makes it alot easier to land some of these guys at a school like LSU.
Play in front of no one while traveling around the country in average conditions, or come to Baton Rouge, get pampered and treated like a rockstar while you develop at the premier program in the country.

Hopefully they win a natty and are top draft picks like Crews and Skenes.

Great call out.
Factor in NIL and players are now getting paid well to play in front of thousands at LSU and similar programs instead of getting paid then heading to the minors where the atmosphere just can't match up in many cases.

Not sure why thus is surprising. Hes getting paid a lot of money to play for lsu in a far better environment than podunk, USA low A ball.

Maybe because it's something that has almost never happened?
Posted on 3/14/25 at 11:52 am to ProjectP2294
yeah he got slightly over value in the top 10 picks.
he got more than Christian Moore ahead of him.
it’s really hard to walk away from 6.5 million…

I’m confused. How did Jay Johnson pair them as roommates prior to him committing and actually being at LSU?

move in day at LSU is before the draft and a lot of them move in if there is a remote chance they don’t get drafted or just to show they’re serious about going to college for leverage
I dont think griffin or camanetti moved in but it’s not insane
