Sources: ACC nearing agreement with Clemson, FSU to end litigation

The ACC and its two restless members — Clemson and Florida State — are inching closer to finalizing a settlement that could allow for league schools to buy back years of their media grant of rights and allow for defections from the conference earlier than the current 2036 timeframe. The agreement would see Clemson and Florida State end their litigation in exchange for a change to the conference’s revenue distribution structure and clarity around the grant of rights, sources tell Yahoo Sports.
ACC presidents are expected to meet Tuesday morning, sources say. Any agreement is subject to a vote from ACC presidents. The board of trustees at both Clemson and Florida State are expected to meet later on Tuesday to discuss any settlement, a separate source told Yahoo Sports.
The schools, each having filed suit against the conference over the last 15 months, have been engrossed in negotiations with the ACC in an effort to increase the revenue that the league distributes to them as well as see the media grant of rights shortened, amended or clarified in some way. The settlement is expected to define the penalty fee that any school would owe for breaking the grant of rights — an agreement that binds ACC schools together through 2036 and is tethered to the league’s ESPN television contract.
The change to the revenue distribution structure is, perhaps, the most interesting piece of this settlement puzzle and could pave the way for other leagues to distribute revenue unevenly.
Under the proposal, the conference would create a new revenue concept that awards significant dollars to programs achieving higher television ratings and viewership in football and basketball, among other factors. The revenue formula would be based on a five-year rolling average of Nielsen ratings generated by each league school, a source said. The media value initiative is expected to distribute millions to members in decreasing payments — from most watched to least.

I thought FSU said they never sued the ACC

As it should be

So once those 2 leave, the ACC, Big 12, and Pac10 will all be either non existent or just pretend dress-up versions of their former selves.
I know the fatcats behind all this are simply doing this to line their pockets but I can't believe the people involved with all this think this is how college football should be.

Unequal distribution is what caused the B12 to fall apart. Same will happen here

What if I told you that they don’t really care about the sport?

The Big 12 did this for years before Texas and OU bolted for the SEC, so that way is well paved already.

Hopefully this means that FSU's athletic dept will stop taking over $20 million annually in public funding.

Wow. So they're basically restructuring the ACC to be C-USA, or at least to be structured like C-USA was when you had whiny-arse, zero-academics Louisville temporarily in the conference. No real revenue sharing, no exit fees- a "scheduling arrangement" at best. To draw an analogy, this is like "going to marriage counseling" or saying "let's just get the kids to college and then talk."
College sports are just such shite now.

Several other teams in the ACC should be buying FSU and Clemson dinner tonight. They just nuked the 2036 deadline that no one thought would hold and they lowered the buyout. As we get closer to 2030, other ACC school Presidents will force another re-negotiation to lower the 100 million buyout.
I expect most schools with under the table invites to either the SEC or BIG to force even more negotiations. The SEC and BIG will take in many more programs before they breakaway. ND, Miami, UNC, GT, FSU, and Clemson are locks to get invites. I also expect SMU and Stanford will too. They both are too rich to leave out.

Equal distribution can destroy a conference if members can get more elsewhere

GT and SMU are not picks for anything.

The conference is already destroyed. FSU and Miami want out and want more money. They signed a contract and are looking to leave as soon as possible. If I’m wake or NC State or Syracuse I’m telling FSU to pound sand, get fricked, and shut up.
Why would I willingly take less money, hasten the destruction of the conference, and pay FSU more all to just left them leave and I get even less sooner?

I’ve been saying for years. It’ll be 40 some odd teams with their own rules and own tv contract under the guidance of commissioner Saban. Just get there already and quit pussyfooting around…..
