We do have some retired ships,,,,like the Tico class cruisers..could we modernize and refurbish some of these, and some others, quicker than total new builds, to keep up with the PLAN navy?

Have you seen the USN in the last two decades? We don't have a plan.
I know some have proposed outsourcing the building to Korea, which would make a lot of sense. But naturally, politicians will kill it to keep jobs in their states, even at the cost of the USN and national security. We managed to take an Italian? frigate design off the shelf, made changes to close to half of the ship, and then were shocked when the cost exploded. Idiots.

Hopefully now that we have an america first military and administration that is on a warpath, we will stop giving our retired ones to other countries and do as you say. Keep them for ourselves and update them.

The Chinese are building a modern navy at a frightening rate, it reminds me of pre WW2's Japanese fleet. Let's hope that we wake up before history repeats itself.

The shipbuilding in WWII was astronomicial. Most on here probably have no idea what the output was. And this was in a period of labor shortage due to the draft

Our Navy would obliterate that Temu imposter Navy.
It wouldn't be close.
ETA: I know most Americans think Chinese people are all super fricking smart because they shared a class with one in school.
As a whole they are one of the dumbest fricking countries on the planet.

US has 10 Aircraft Carrier groups
China has 3
US outnumbers China with Destroyers 2-1.
Out sub fleet is 25 years ahead of China in tech and numbers.
They have a bunch of small corvette patrol ships. They outnumber us with those ships.
The ships that count they are a couple of trillion dollars behind.

You might want to watch the documentary Star Blazers.

Says who? Their Navy is outdated garbage that can't even pass their own shakedown sea trials. Plus we, by a wide margin, have air superiority and can launch a ship killer missile far outside their defensive range.

The US has the battleship Missouri (BB-63) which still has some fight in her as seen in the movie Battleship

That was a world ago. But, thank God Biden is out of the chair and we have a doer in charge.

While China is rapidly expanding its navy, the U.S. still holds a decisive technological, operational, and logistical edge in a naval confrontation. The U.S. Navy holds several key advantages over China in a potential naval conflict:
Carrier Strike Groups (CSGs): The U.S. operates 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, each capable of projecting overwhelming airpower. China only has a few carriers, which lack catapult launch systems for heavier aircraft.
Submarine Superiority: U.S. nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) are stealthier, have longer operational endurance, and are more advanced than China’s diesel-electric and nuclear subs.
Global Logistics & Forward Presence: The U.S. Navy maintains bases and logistics hubs worldwide, while China’s naval operations remain heavily dependent on proximity to its coastline.
Experience & Training: The U.S. Navy conducts high-intensity, multi-carrier operations globally, while China’s fleet has minimal real-world combat experience.
Advanced Weapons & Technology: The U.S. fields superior naval aviation, Aegis-equipped warships, and hypersonic missile defenses, while China relies heavily on land-based missile systems (DF-21D, DF-26) that are vulnerable to countermeasures.
Allied Support: The U.S. Navy operates alongside allies such as Japan, Australia, and NATO, while China has few reliable naval partners.

Our navy would obliterate china’s and its not even remotely close. Don’t we outspend china like 2-1 in defense?
