The fact that service academies are able to convince ANYONE to go through all the normal BS of their strict routine on top of sports requirements is insane to me. Its SOOO much work to play a sport that you are almost guaranteed not to go pro in.

That's one way to look at it.
Another perspective is that these dudes get time away from the strict routine to travel and play ball.

Looks wasteful. Hopefully DOGE looks into this.

The vast majority of college athletes don't have a shot to go pro. However, college sports on a resume is a strong thing to have. It requires a ton of dedication and discipline for those guys to do all that is required of them and still play a sport and put in the time for the sport.

It looks cool and all, but riding in the back of a C-17 ain't exactly the lap of luxury. And thats not exactly a short flight from West Point to Colorado Springs.

The majority of these athletes aren't going pro regardless of where they go. A degree from any of the service academies has them set for life once they fulfill their duty and they are debt free. They won't get the typical college experience but it's definitely an amazing investment for the long term.

Athletes have an easier time at the academies.

If my tax dollars are going to be wasted any kind of way, Army taking an Army plane to a baseball game is way less of a waste than the millions spent on gender studies in Pakistan.

that is sick. do they do that ever road series?
Do they have to land at army bases?

I thought the academies require you to participate in 1-2 sports . Even if its just club sports they still have to put in practice and training.

I could be wrong, but I believe Paul Skenes mentioned in an interview once that they use their cargo planes to travel every road trip at Air Force.

This is correct. Every student, at all of the academies, has to participate in an extracurricular activity. There are a ton of club sports to choose from. Those are taken just as seriously as the D1 sports.

Know a senior on the team. AF sends the plane to get them. First time has happened in his 4 years.

I don’t think the guys playing for Army are pro prospects or have intentions of doing so. It’s not like they guys are turning down first round money or offers to play at Major big time programs. They are focused elsewhere

This isn't unique. It's how the AF team travels as well.
The pilots need flight hours anyway, so it's no more wasteful than any other crew ride or training mission.
Kids go for the same reason kids go to Harvard or Notre Dame or Northwestern.
The network of successful people that are alums and sports alums of these programs is astounding. They leave, do their service, and then are essentially set for life.
Takes the right kid to go to these schools and stay, but those who do usually have a nice life.
