ScreenRant

Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid. But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes.

On one hand, I love Lithgow but on the other hand i think they should have gone with someone a bit younger.

Plus side, it opens up casting to anyone, they dont need to be British

would you feel this way if they'd have cast him originally?

Same

He is far, far, far too old. He might get 2-3 seasons before needing to be replaced. He's 86-87

Should have cast a Brit in his 60s and just aged him up

And I like Lithgow a lot

Are they still casting Snape as a black guy? Or was that a rumor?

I mean just being realistic he's going to die before they are done filming this. Odd choice just based on age.

Fair. Still too old imo

I thought he meant the wrap party for season 1. There's literally zero chance this finishes entirely in 7-8 years in this era of TV making

I’m really hoping they go against the recent TV grain here and make one season every year.

The seasons could easily be 4-6 episodes about an hour each. That’s doable.

I love Lithgow. But wish it was someone younger, I just don’t want a Richard Harris situation. If they could age him up I think Jack Davenport would be been a good fit.

Lithgow is an honorary Brit for playing an excellent Churchill in The Crown. I do not understand the logic behind this casting though. Richard Harris 2.0

Me too. The first 2 books in no way shape or form require 8 episodes a piece. They are far too short and simple for that.

If they are smart they will do 5ish episodes for both of those, and film back to back as the kids will look similar ages

Prisoner could be done in 5-6 as well imo. And so you could easily have 3 seasons in 3 years.

The rest of the books would need the standard 8ish episodes to be done well and that's when it could drag.

What is crazy is that Richard Harris was only 72 when he died

Damn! I never realized that. I thought he was well into his late 70s or 80s at that point.

Variety posted in Dec, that they were looking at Paapa Essiedu, who is black, as Snape, but in the same article thy also said that Mark Rylance was in the running to play Dumbledore.

Apparently after reading a bit, the plan is to do 7 seasons in 10 years and the first season will be 8 episodes, which seems like a LOT for book 1.

There is basically no chance he makes it to a sixth season of this show.

That could be 15 years from now at the current pace HBO is putting out its seasons.
