Same reason lot of Americans say “umm”, “and uhh”, “you know” “ so ahh”. Just a filler before they gather their train of thought in a conversation or at the end of a conversation.
Saban did the “aight” thing a lot.

So Jacques Trudeau who was prime minister in 1856 was hard of hearing and so said aye quite often. He was a cherished hero, a general in the Greenland war of 1812, who the nation adored. So as a gesture of loving respect, Canadians starting using aye after sentences.

They're supposed to say "Eh, la bas", but it never caught on, even in French Canada.
