I'm not planning to move, but I was just thinking about Lexington, Kentucky and it seems like it could be a really nice place to live. I've only driven around the outside, haven't spent any considerable time actually in it though.

- Moderate climate
- Not too small, not too large
- Centrally located in the US, close to the hill country of Kentucky
- Relatively short drive to the mountains
- Moderate cost of living
- SEC school in town, so lots going on and you get the vibe/culture that a big university brings
- Advantageous demographics
- Nice downtown

Overall it seems like a Baton Rouge, just without a river and nicer, but population seems to have leveled recently. What am I missing?

Louisville just made the OT recently due to its murder rate, I believe.

I was going to include "close to Louisville and Cincinnati" in my list but didn't think those were benefits. Though I've heard Cincy is actually really cool.

Wife and I went to a LSU/Kentucky game a few years back, loved it. Would love to retire there.

Knoxville > Lexington

Right next to the mountains and no state income tax in Tennessee.

We've spent some time in Knoxville. Not bad and the river is nice. Close to some nice lakes (we went up to Douglas Lake). A decent amount smaller than Lexington.

Lexington is great, as soon as you realize you are in hood, you are out of the hood.

Downtown is super safe too!!

Went to the LSU game a few years back and it was an amazing trip. They've really done a great job with their downtown. A lot of bars, restaurants, shops, etc all walkable from the hotels. Great bars and restaurants too btw. They have the bourbon trail right nearby. Keeneland is there in Lexington and I'd put that as a must go even if you don't do horse racing. It was just beautiful and the crowd was great. We happened to be there for the opening weekend of their fall season and it was just a top notch experience. We also played golf there and it was as fantastic as everything else. Pristine course, rolling hills, horses grazing in the distance. The campus wasn't especially nice but they had a good team then and there was a great energy around and inside of the stadium. I can't say enough good things about the trip.

Came back home and told my wife it would be at the top of places I'd want to move to if we moved.

Traffic is terrible in Lexington for a city it's size. New Circle Road is slowly widening, but will take years. NIcholasville Road is a parking lot during rush hour.

Can't say much about the housing cost, not really checked lately. The restaurant scene is pretty good in Lexington and we never run out of ideas for where to go for dinner. Parks are very good. UK Arboretum is great, the Brighton Rail Trail and Raven Run are cool as well.

Downtown will look even better when they complete the Town Branch greenway project.

It is nothing like Baton Rouge. It is much cleaner and just more pleasant. It's also just in a much nicer area of the country.

Can you expand upon this and tell the class what you really mean?

Downtown Knoxville is underwhelming to me. although I like the Market Square area and the greenways along the TN River. Knoxville is spread out much more than Lexington. West Knoxville seems like it lasts forever along I-40.

Both cities are pretty nice. I do like Knoxville for it's proximity to the mountains and Knoxville's Urban wilderness/Ijams Nature center is awesome for hiking and biking.
