MLB and ESPN agree to end broadcast partnership after 2025 season

ESPN wanted a smaller, cheaper broadcast deal with MLB, but Commissioner Rob Manfred ?? :
"We do not think its beneficial for us to accept a smaller deal to remain on a shrinking platform..."
More: "We do not believe that Pay TV, ESPN’s primary distribution platform, is the future of video distribution or the best platform for our content. As of December 2024, ESPN was available in 53.6M homes, down from its peak of over 100M homes in 2011 and 69M homes when we struck the current deal in 2021.
“Furthermore, we have not been pleased with the minimal coverage that MLB has received on ESPN’s platforms over the past several years outside of the actual live game coverage.
“Based on the foregoing, we and ESPN have mutually agreed to terminate our agreement..."
ESPN significantly reduced their baseball coverage and instead angled themselves toward NFL and NBA. They dropped Monday night and Wednesday baseball and killed Baseball Tonight. So their only baseball focus is the singular Sunday Night Baseball broadcast.

Or streaming. Amazon has gotten in on RSNs. Wouldn't shock me to see them go after an exclusive game of the week. I just hope AppleTV doesn't increase their footprint.

This had been rumored for a minute.
Still surprising nonetheless. SNBB has been a staple for 30 years.

Well yea, ESPN has become the professional basketball drama network

Between the regional networks fiasco and now espn mlb is not in a good position when they don’t want your product
Maybe if the dodgers weren’t deferring every contract and you had some uniformity in the league it might work

If they gave baseball half the attention they give the Association, the baseball ratings may have been a lot stronger.

It's as strong financially as it's ever been.
Stop.

Nah regular season national baseball broadcasts are dead. People only watch their own team and since ESPN broadcasts end up being Yankees/Mets/Dodgers/Cubs 75% of the time that just makes it worse for them.

I used to watch the shite out of baseball tonight as a kid back in the late 90s early 2000s range.

Can the MLB Network end the crappy blackout rules on the streaming app?

wonder if College Baseball can capitalize off this.
Get more air time during the year in national TV when other sports are off.
