That's approximately 1.5 credit cards/accounts per federal employee, with ~19.5 charges per card/account for ~444$ per transaction and ~$19,565 in charges per card/account.

The average amount of charges per card isn't concerning. The amount per transaction and the total per card is a bit concerning, but 1.5 cards per employee? What in the fricking frick???

Are gas (fleet) cards separate from expense account cards?

Can you imagine the fraud on a federal government CC?

They can be. I know the state has separate cards for purchases vs fuel and at least some agencies tie a single card to a single vehicle.

The federal government has approximately 656,000 fleet vehicles (trucks, cars, vans, etc). Subtracting a card for each vehicle would still leave 3M employees with ~4M cards.

Don't think there are any on the govt cards, but when we used to travel using DTS we were prompted to use our own skymiles and hotel rewards accounts even tho the govt was paying.

DOGE should change that so the govt gets the cash equivalent of these miles/points

I don’t have a government issued Credit Card, adjust your calculations accordingly.

Yes they are. As well as "purchase cards" which only certain people have to buy things for the office officially. Each employee get a GOV CC for official travel.

You’ve got aircraft, ground support equipment and a lot of other similar items I’d guess as well.

I had two. One for procurement, one for travel.

My first hunch would be that the discrepancy is largely due to something like that...

Check and see if those people are using reward points for personal gain. Time to start locking people up!

I'm guessing you are in the private sector?

Even if we say anyone with a card has 3 cards (not including the gas cards removed in an earlier post), that's still 1.3M of the 3M federal employees with cards or nearly half (44%) of all federal employees with cards/accounts. Is every other federal employee involved in purchasing? It seems like the auditing on that would be a bit difficult to keep up with.

Sort of ironic isn’t it? The reason for so many is to keep charges separated within cost centers…to avoid inappropriate usage. You can choose effective or efficient, not both.

This is a little of

1) Way too many credit cards
2) Absolutely shitty bookkeeping

I have seen enough sets of books to know that NOBODY knows how to record credit cards correctly or close the account down to zero once you get rid of one. I cannot tell you how many times I have asked a client for a year end statement on an account they say they have a $5,356 liability on the balance sheet on. "Oh... we paid that off 2 years ago and closed the account." Well why the frick does it say you owe 5 grand on it. "I dunno... we don't really look at the balance sheet".

And this is a business that gets their books looked at every now and then and questioned. Stuff like that would snowball when nobody looks at or cares about the books.

Most if not all employees get a travel card used specific for traveling and another for other purchases (pcards), but those don't get handed out all willy nilly.

So 1.5 card average makes sense

When I worked for a university, I believe that at one time they would occasionally issue cards specific to an organization for people who handled purchasing just to make reconciling expenses easier. However, I only worked for feds as a uniformed service member. I had one card for travel and other expenses but the motor pool vehicles (LMTV, HMMWV, etc) had fuel cards.

Agreed, but they aren't filling up Air Force One with Donnie's Shell card.

A lot of what I think you are referring to should be more likely to be funneled to an account tied to fuel tanks at a location rather than a card/account per vehicle.
