During a joint press conference between the Cullman County District Attorney and Sheriff's Offices, DA Champ Crocker revealed that a recent investigation from the State Bureau of Investigation found that the Hanceville Police Department is a "particular and ongoing threat to public safety."

"There is a rampant culture of corruption in the Hanceville Police Department, which has recently operated as more of a criminal enterprise than a law enforcement agency," read court documents obtained by WVTM 13 at the press conference.

quote:

The negligence of the Hanceville Police Department directly resulted in the recent death of local dispatcher Chris Willingham

It was determined that Mr. Willingham died from “Combined toxic effects of fentanyl, gabapentin, diazepam, amphetamine, carisoprodol, and methocarbamol”
"Unfettered" access to the HPD evidence room played a role in Willingham's death

quote:

The evidence room at the Hanceville Police Department was not secure and was routinely accessed by individuals who were not authorized to do so.
Perpetrators routinely used a broomstick to jimmy open the door by pushing it through a hole in the evidence room's exterior wall
Security footage captured repeatedly captured these events
Hanceville police have failed to maintain the Hanceville Jail and meet the basic health and safety concerns of both inmates and staff

All of the following charges are felonies with the exception of tampering with physical evidence:

quote:

Those arrested include: Chief Jason Marlin – Two counts of ethics violations (failure to file or cooperate) and tampering with physical evidence. Jason Scott Wilbanks – Two counts of computer tampering, tampering with physical evidence, conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime and use of official office for personal gain. William Andrew Shelnutt: Tampering with physical evidence. Cody Allen Kelso – Two counts of computer tampering, tampering with physical evidence, conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime and use of official office for personal gain. Eric Michael Kelso – Four counts of the sale/distribution of dangerous drugs, two counts of conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime. Eric Michael Kelso’s spouse, Donna Reed Kelso is also facing charges for the sale/distribution of dangerous drugs and two counts of conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime.

Damn. You Alabama baws got some Louisiana level crooked officials.

How the frick is "tampering with physical evidence" the only charge that isn't a felony? I would argue it's the most important one.

I’m just thankful this wasn’t about DeKalb or Jackson County. Easily could have been.

In the late 80s, I was in high school in Athens, Alabama for a couple years, when my dad worked nearby. Kids at school talked about attending Klan rallies in Cullman on various weekends. It was as casual as you would talk about going to the lake, or a hunting camp.

I think in today's world you probably couldn't find 1000 organized Klan members in the country that weren't keyboard warriors, but 200 of them would live near Cullman, Al.

Probably half of that (just due to population. Probably more per capita) live in or near Munford, AL in Talladega county. Just a few miles before you get to the county line is where they burned a Freedom Riders bus leaving Anniston. I grew up in that area and know exactly what you mean.

I've worked in Cullman before and there was a sign on a dirt road back off in the boonies that said don't let the sun go down on your black arse. Co worker was from there and said they weren't kidding and he knew some white hat members who lived there.

The only time we ever visited was to the Ave Maria Grotto. We were cultured like that.

Former mayor was inept and corrupt as hell too. I’m not surprised this behavior stemmed directly off of that

Had no business being in public office

Had to resign in 2023 LINK

You know it's a crazy story when the OT hasn't commented on this yet:
