Has anyone tried the beta?

Will it work in international waters (ie, 50 miles out in the GOA where there’s no cell service)?

Is there a rugged flip phone that will work with the service?

Idk about starlink T-Mobile

But I have installed a few starlink dishes on Freemans that fish the GOM and they get service just fine.

Buddy of mine was using iPhone to text last year in Colorado in areas without cell phone service. Not sure if that’s what you are asking or the actual starlink internet. For the Internet it’s being used on offshore platforms 50-60m out. It’s slow as in almost like old school dial up but it does work.

You may be referring to the older generation (VSAT or microwave) but I have experienced Starlink on platforms from 70-150 miles offshore that get 250-300 Mbps speeds.

iPhone sat texting doesn't work offshore. I know quite a few people who tried this past fall.

As to your speed statement, that is factually incorrect. Starlink is fast AF and maintains connectivity in all conditions I've used it in. We use it to stream DirectTV on the MFDs on my buddy's boat. The platforms are using Rignet most likely, which is slow AF. Those 2 are NOT the same.

Starlink is the tits. I'm very curious to hear about the TMobile partnership results.

Tried this out on my iPhone last summer, out near Freemason and it worked surprisingly well. Faster to send/receive than my Garmin. Did have to point it properly at first.

Maybe it was all the people using it (Derrick barge)
It was slow AF and it was star link, teams calls would glitch which was fine just send a text or an email. But Instagram reels would glitch and FaceTime with the fam was such a PItA I was just texting.

Yeah maybe so. I've never seen any problems on the boat with streaming and 4 or 5 other people on thier phones at the same time. But a bunch of hard legs on a Derrick barge I'm sure could take up bandwidth with the quickness

For those unfamiliar with what you're talking about TMobile has joined up with StarLink and you'll be able to use StarLink satellites to stay connected anywhere on the globe, including offshore, as it converts your phone to a satellite phone. It'll only work with iPhone 14s and up and you can currently sign up for the Beta testing phase for free, regardless of who your service provider is. The service is supposed to be an additional $15/month once activated. My phone is too old but I'd love to try it out, this should be able to take the place of something like a Garmin InReach.

It works with Android, certain phones. I'm in the beta with a Samsung S24. Haven't had to use the Starlink yet though.

I wonder how it works if you already have ATT.

Since the T Mobile legal coverage area is the USA landmass I wonder if it will extend offshore, and if so, how far? It could be legally cutoff at the US territorial waters which would render it useless for offshore texting.

I'm wondering the same thing. I know the current iPhone sat text feature is definitely limited to withina couple miles of the coastline. I'm sure it will match Starlink coverage in the future, but for now the map does not "include" the GOA.

If you have ATT you can get full LTE service at most of the MC block floaters.

I get better ATT service at the Mars/Ursa compound than I get at my house lol. And that’s without starlink or any other extra service

No service in open water though

Not anymore. I was able to Facetime my wife last summer while fishing at Constitution using whatever cell network they have set up out there
