CINCINNATI — The Bengals plan on placing the non-exclusive franchise tag on Tee Higgins for a second-straight season, league sources have confirmed.

The tag window officially opens on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. ET and lasts until Tuesday, March 4 at 4 p.m. ET.

Sources say Higgins' camp expects to get tagged at this point. He would be the top free agent if he were to make it to free agency.

That isn't expected to happen. The Bengals will tag Higgins by the March 4 deadline.

Their "why" certainly feels different this time around.

Last year the Bengals tagged Higgins and there wasn't much dialogue about a long-term contract. He was the only player that was tagged by his team last year that didn't sign a multi-year extension.

This year feels different. The Bengals plan to sign the star receiver to a long-term deal, sources say.

They either need to just let him walk or tag him but try to trade him to a team that’ll extend him. Try to get something for him in his hat case.

Paying him and Chase just isn’t smart when the defense is trash.

That’s year Higgins was kind of disgruntled when they tagged him. He didn’t play with nagging injuries because he didn’t have long contract. Seems like they need to either crap or get off the pot.

Bengals are the L.A. Angels. I trust whatever they decide to do will be the worst option they could choose.

The Non-Exclusive tag means other teams could technically agree to a contract with him.

The Bengals would have the opportunity to match that other team’s offer. If they let him walk, they lose Higgins, but they would get two first round picks from his new team.

this is setup to get a deal done
if it's not done by draft they may trade him
if it's not done by camp then look for a holdout to force a trade

Seems like they’re playing it smart, trying to get something in return rather than letting him star for another team.

I don’t see how they can afford long term deals for Higgins and Chase.

They should let him walk. Use that money on multiple defenders. Draft another WR.

OL is just as bad as the defense too.

I don't think the Bengals owner is even financially capable of paying Chase, Higgins, and Hendrickson this season. With the new rules, they have to deposit all guaranteed money in a bank account when the contract is signed. Mike Brown ain't got half a billion after paying Burrow last year.

That, plus Burrow is damn good enough of a QB that if you used the Higgins money to instead get him some stability and quality pass protection on the OL, he can get the ball to whomever his WR2 is.

The last (Only?) non-exclusive tag player to sign a deal with a new team was Joey Galloway to Dallas 25 yrs ago, and Dallas had to give Seattle two 1st round picks.

If I am a Bengals fan, I am praying for New England to out-Jerry Jerry Jones for dumbest shite ever, and give up the 4th overall this year and another (likely very high) first rounder next year for my #2 WR.

I replace Higgins with my second round (49th overall) pick and that's after I took Will Campbell or Kelvin Banks with the 4th overall from NE and a DT/DB with my own 19th overall pick. I also replaced a $20M cap hit with a rookie contract.

Consecutive tags on a receiver who’s broken 100 yards in a game 4 times in the last 2 years?

Franchise is wild

I think the bengals were hoping to buy a year while they got Burton ready to compliment Chase but they under estimated how big of a dumb arse he is and now they’re worried about upsetting Joe if they let him walk.

In today’s NFL I think you need two stud WRs but the bengals have a lot of other areas to address if they want to reopen their window, maybe they could have saved some room had they been smarter and extended chase before he went scorched earth last season
