Amongst the most controversial acts made by the U.S. and British militaries over the course of the Second World War, from February 13-15, 1945, the RAF and USAAF dropped almost 4,000 tons of high explosive and incendiary bombs on the city of Dresden, Germany. The bombing and resultant firestorm killed more than 25,000 German civilians as the center of the city was completely destroyed. The city was a major rail transport and industrial hub, housing 110 factories with 50,000 workers. However, it has been noted by many historians that few of the factories and rail hubs were targeted in the bombings.

To this day there is an ongoing debate about whether or not the bombings were justified and if they should constitute a war crime.

My paw paw provided air support for these very bombings in his P-51D Mustang. Flew 56 missions total.

Read Fredrick Taylor’s book Dresden. You will understand 100% why they bombed the hell out of that place.

All's fair in war. You either go in balls to the wall or you don't go in.

As the British would ( and did ) say, "the other bastard shouldn't have joined".
Elections have consequences.
Don't start none, won't be none.
Etc.

I don't understand how anyone can justify killing innocent children and women in fire.

You begin the conversation by discussing what was going on with the Nazi party and the atrocities they were committing. Is it terrible that it happened? Sure, but it was a tool they had to break the will and resolve.

It’s not justified, but children throughout history have had to pay for the sins of their fathers. After 5 years of war the Allies were bound and determined to destroy the fighting will of the Nazis. Germany wanted a war and they got one

The only reason that I’d argue it wasn’t a war crime was that the Nazis had already opened a total war campaign against the British by targeting civilian centers like London by V1 and V2 attack.

I am against total war. But if a nation declares total war on you, it’s within your rights to do so in return as your very existence depends on preventing that enemy from defeating you.

That said id argue there were far better uses of the bomber command and all the post op analysis backs that up, but once someone bombs your urban centers they can’t complain when the same is done to theirs.

Sucks for the innocent casualties of war but it was time the Nazis got hit in their homeland , that the war was over and we will level your entire country if you don’t surrender
