McMahon a good coach, just not a good fit for LSU

We've all seen it happen before and I think it's become apparent that the McMahon experiment has failed and it's time to move on. I don't think it's a reflection of his coaching ability, but more so, he's just not the right guy for LSU. It should be noted he had to build his entire roster, which few coaches have ever had to do, and you throw in the transfer portal and NIL, and he stepped into a hornet's nest!
Even with all those obstacles, LSU is not a place for the straight laced, prim and proper type of coach like McMahon. Successful LSU coaches have all had an edge and fire to them like Saban, Mulkey, DD Breaux, Miles, Dale Brown, Bertman and even Coach O to name a few.
Simply put. LSU coaches need to reflect its fan base and we all know LSU fans are fiery, passionate and extremely vocal. Considering everything, I think McMahon has done a decent job, but it's evident he's just not the right guy for the position. Unfortunately, it happens more than we know.
In fact, just down the road in T-Town, many Alabama fans are already saying the new FB HC isn't a good fit and a change needs to be made. I guess the good news for both coaches is if they are fired, they will both leave a lot wealthier than they arrived.

I can see where this is the case. Dennis Allen is by all accounts a great DC but he was a terrible fit for us as HC. McMahon is a good mid major coach but he is not what we need to compete in the SEC.

He’s too nice of a guy to be a power 5 coach. You have to be able to get down and dirty and it doesn’t seem like he has it in him

nah
It's about the basketball. It's not about the personality.

Let’s break it down.
Is he a good fast paced transition coach? No
Is he a good offensive coach? No
Is he a good play calling coach? No
Is he a good defensive coach? No
Is he a good recruiter? He’s ok.
Maybe he is just not a good coach. And that’s ok. Plenty of coaches are like that. Just not in the SEC and top conferences.

If by fit you mean the P5 level is beyond his ability then yes.

I agree that we need a brash personality that will push the admin to care. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and you forget McMohan even exists he’s so silent and out of the way of things.
One thing I wouldn’t agree on is that he’s a good coach in general. As others pointed out, he had some historically bad seasons for Murray States standards, but had a some stars align that helped him go on a run. I think for someone to actually be considered a “good coach” they should have some translatable ability across any level.

Is he? He’s sub .500 overall at LSU.
The previous 7 coaches at Murray St. before him all had a winning percentage of above 65% at Murray State. Murray State is a powerhouse Mid Major program and has been for 40 years. The previous 2 coaches before him rattled off 30 win seasons there.
He had 4 good seasons out of 7 there. It sounds like to me “McMahon’s success” as a coach stemmed from him being at a dominant mid major program, and then having the #2 overall pick playing in the dang Ohio Valley Conference.

“ but he’s a good coach”. Is what people say about bad coaches.

Tom Crean vs. Georgia is an apt parallel to the McMahon ordure.

LSU basketball coach needs to also be a promoter. McMahon is a bad coach and has the personality of a rock.

He is not an SEC coach period….It will be interesting to see how long LSU rides this pathetic train…..

If he was a good coach he would at least be 500 in the SEC. He's like 12-33 in nearly 3 years that's not a good coach!

I totally disagree! Nick Saban was barely over .500 at his time and Michigan State and I think he turned out to be a decent coach.

No, he’s a bad coach.

We should hire Massimino

Dennis Allen already proved himself to be a terrible head coach before the Saints ever hired him. He wasn’t just a bad fit. He’s a terrible head coach.

I don’t think he bad defensively. His biggest flaw is he is married to an offensive scheme that doesn’t work.
He also hasn’t really put together a complete roster.
