So my tax lady went crazy and retired….
I don’t see the point of paying $200,if I have standard deduction, 1 child in college, and 1 in middle school.
Wife and I are both W2 employees… consider hustles, etc.
How easy is turbo tax? (Specifically around college expenses)

I would just use free tax usa if you are taking the standard deduction.
Federal is free, but you will have to pay $12-$14 for state.
I've been using it since I was 14.

H&R Block TaxCut is what I've used for years. 20m yesterday, I'm just waiting on a few more 1099-INTs, and I will be done and filed in under an hour.

The new tax laws make it pretty simple. The standard deduction this year I believe is about 24,000. As long as you don’t play with stocks and have rental properties you will able to figure it out. Most places now can import a w2 and save your information from year to year to make it even easier.

It will ask you all the pertinent questions about college expenses etc. If it makes you feel better, you might go back and look at what she filed last year to make sure there isnt some credit she claimed that didnt pop up this year but I doubt it.

You're gonna be pissed when you see what you've been paying for.

I have no idea why anyone taking the standard deduction would pay someone to do their taxes.

Standard deduction for MFJ is $29,200. School should provide a 1098T that reports qualified education expenses and scholarships received.

I don't blame her.

It's very easy for that situation.
I pay $425 a month but have a business and a complex-ish file.

I did some trading… how much does it complicate a return?

So I’ve never received one of these from SLU…. I thought I should have as well.
I just told her how much I paid.

Any tax software will walk you right through it. It’s not hard

I just have TurboTax grab and download all of my Fidelity Tax forms with a 1 button click in TurboTax and any capital gains or losses from 1099 forms are instantly incorporated. Of course, I do double check TurboTax for accuracy.

Anyone tried the direct file tool that the IRS dropped for this year? I know it's not available in every state yet but I'm one of the lucky ones (TX).

Just be sure to get the right level of TurboTax that covers that situation and it will walk you through everything step by step.
Usually the downloadable versions of TT are cheaper/better value than the online version. Costco and amazon usually have good deals. Costco version has $10 in-app credit towards anything. I use it on state e-file since my state e-file is not free.

Used Turbo Tax for 7 years. Then that one year I needed an additional form, turbo Tax was completely useless.
Have used Free Tax USA since.

Doesn't this site (and other free sites) have income limits?

You may be able to login to the students page at SLU and download the 1098T
