What DeepSeek knows about you — and why it matters
Do DeepSeek’s privacy issues worry you? They should.

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI chatbot similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, is the most downloaded free app in the U.S. — but its swift rise to the top of the app store charts has raised potent privacy concerns at a time when the U.S. is banning TikTok over its ties to the Chinese government.

Like most apps, DeepSeek requires you to agree to its privacy policy when you sign up to access it — but you probably don't read it.
...

Here's the TL;DR from DeepSeek's privacy policy:
It collects "Information You Provide"

Profile information like date of birth, username, email address, telephone number, password

The text, audio, prompt, feedback, chat history, uploaded files, and other content you provide to DeepSeek

Information when you contact them, like proof of identity or age and feedback or inquiries

It collects "Automatically Collected Information"

Internet and other network activity information like your IP address, device identifier, and cookies

Technical information like your device model, operating system, keystroke patterns or rhythms, IP address, system language, diagnostic and performance information, and an automatically assigned device ID and user ID

Usage information like the features you use

Payment information, which is self-explanatory

It collects "Information from Other Sources"

Log-in, sign-up, or linked services and accounts, like if you sign up using Google or Apple

Advertising measurement and other partners share user information with DeepSeek, such as what you've bought at their stores
.....

What do "keystroke patterns or rhythms" mean?
DeepSeek's privacy policy states that it collects "keystroke patterns or rhythms," which might seem unusual but not completely uncommon. For instance, TikTok collects the same information, while Instagram does not.

Worried about privacy?

That ship sailed back in 2008. At this point I’d trust the Chinese with our data over the NSA.

I think NC Boomer is just jealous Deepseek made Sam Altman look like a dumbass Watch the below clip and you will see why OpenAI let a company with less people and resources beat them. Sam Altman looks like a arrogant prick. He got humbled

Writing is thinking

When people stupidly parrot, “what’s the big deal, they have all our information anyway”, they don’t know what the frick they are talking about. By having a full record of how we type, they also have a record of how we think. The belief is that, long term, when these AI models get powerful enough, they will be able to functionally reverse engineer our entire thought process.

You think people are easy to manipulate now? Wait until a handful of super powerful AI companies armed with ASI have a record of the specific thought process of every person in the world.

We’re hurling towards dystopia, and no one seems to care

The government lost the right to preach at me about “Chinese interference” when they signed the patriot act way back when.

The time for discussion was 15 years ago. At this point dystopia is here and, lucky for us, you get to pick your flavor because all the horror stories science fiction was warning us about has, or is about to be reality. Hope you boys are well read! We are IN it!

No one cares about DeepSeek being an exclusive China app like they did with TikTok. Wonder why?

It's open source, so people can look under the hood and see what is there.

In fact, there is little evidence of that at all.
Sorry, but there is no evidence you actually read the article, much less understood what you read.

You saw a thread critical of "DeepSeek," got triggered, stopped reading at the title, and reacted on pure emotional outrage, as triggered people do.

While the author draws some delineation between Chinese & US apps, e.g.,
quote:

DeepSeek's privacy policy states that it collects "keystroke patterns or rhythms," ... TikTok collects the same information, while Instagram does not.

Here is the article's conclusion:
quote:

Stronger data privacy laws would help everyone, whether it concerns apps located in China or apps with similarly questionable data privacy laws in the U.S., like Meta and OpenAI.
Do you disagree?

I guess while I'm at it, I should address this stupidity as well.
I'm not an Altman fan.

In contrast, I think quite a bit of Musk. "Fan" wouldn't be accurate as it's excessively effusive in describing someone I've never met. However, I am a fan of pragmatic accomplishment, and Musk certainly meets that mark in spades. So when he raises public concern about Altman's care and understanding of AI guardrails, or Larry Page's FTM, I take note.

That doesn't necessarily mean I take him at his word (e.g., Musk assuredly knows Climate Change "Science" is complete bullshite. Yet, he happily encourages it, because it's great for TSLA), but it does leave me suspicious of Altman as a possibly overweening Boris Grishenko type character. So some undercutting of Altman playing US AI lead is just fine with me.

China is a different deal though. I'd prefer they didn't have access, or capability to access my bank accounts, private transactions, etc., or those of any other American. They are an existential threat to the west and freedom. Your willingness to slobber their knob is unfortunate, inane, but noted.

Well Hoss, it's not a matter of what I "think."
How "they" trained ChatGPT is a matter of widely disseminated public disclosure.
I could detail that for you in response to your likely inebriated query last night, but I doubt you'd see the post when you next visit the board in a month or two.

What is your current trade position on NVDA?

I would caution wash trades and the underlying tax rules associated with potentially making short term profits unless you are shielded in various ways.

Nothing about Deepseek passed the smell test the minute the press release went public announcing it. I believed close to nothing coming out of the CCP.

I'm curious how much the communist party had shorting our Tech stocks?
