A Baton Rouge woman was sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for fraudulently using pandemic relief money from the U.S. Small Business Administration to pay for her destination wedding and jewelry, and more than $2,000 worth of DoorDash deliveries, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Tuesday.
Gernesia Williams, 47, was sentenced in U.S. Middle District Court in Baton Rouge where Judge Brian Jackson also ordered her to pay $110,030 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release when she gets out of prison.

Williams pleaded guilty to "knowing conversion" of government funds, U.S. Attorney Ronald Gathe Jr., said in a prepared statement.
Between April 2020 and January 2023, Williams converted more than $100,000 in loan proceeds from the SBA's COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan program for her own use, authorities said.

The loan was supposed to be used solely as working capital to alleviate economic injury caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Williams spent the money on herself and others, with purchases including $30,000 worth of jewelry and a $20,000 destination wedding in Florida.

I’d love to know the real amount of covid relief money that was fraudulent

I know people whose businesses had their best years during COVID, yet they still filed for and received PPP loans, which they spent on boats and other things.
And of course the "loans" were forgiven.

Good. I got sick of coming home from work in 2020-23 so I could see people like this B---- slapping each other in the face with slices of stuffed crust meat lover's from Pizza Hut or some shite.

She is low hanging fruit for some AUSA to make headlines. So many much more fraudulent things happened with that SBA CV19 money.

I'm a little out of the loop with gov'ment law. Since all these loans were pretty much forgiven, would she just have to have waited just a little while til the loan was forgiven and then use it all?
