OEM verses glass shop auto windshield?

What’s the difference between a dealership windshield and a glass shop one? Will it not have shading around the tire view mirror like the OEM? Chip and crack easier?

Cheaper ones are sometimes thinner and are more prone to chips. I had Safelite replace my Ram windshield with a generic & I couldn't see my heads-up display & the view was slightly distorted. I made them swap it for an OEM/Mopar.

I asked if it was an OEM windshield and she said no.

Yeah. If you have any fancy tech that traverses the windshield you will need an OEM in order for that stuff to work.

Safelite put in an eom for me 2 weeks ago. No issue

I just called a glass shop. I figure I’ll take apart the trim (remove the wipers) at the base of the windshield before I drive it over.

Because they’ll break every clip and fastener on the wiper cover.

Sensors and bullshite on that model vehicle that activate may or may not work.
At least that’s what they tell you to get you buy OEM.

This car has none. It’s a manual and they didn’t offer it with the lane assist and advanced cruise stuff.

I’ve had Safelite come out to my house and replace the windshields in a GMC Yukon, Toyota Tacoma, and a Toyota Camry and all physically looked just like the oems.

It depends. No vehicle manufacture makes their own glass. They all source it. All vehicle glass should be made to NAGS standard.
The problem is that some aftermarket companies use really cheap glass and it can be wavy. Wavy glass really fricks up electronics that depend on your windshield like heads up displays, cameras, some adaptive cruise, etc. Some is so bad that it’s noticeable when you look through it. Places like Safelite don’t give a shite and will put that glass on your vehicle instead of rejecting it.
Some aftermarket companies make excellent glass (like PPG) that’s equal to or better in some cases than OEM with the only difference being the vehicle logo not etched in the glass.
If you have an older vehicle with no electronics that rely on your windshield then aftermarket is generally fine. If it’s a new vehicle with all the bells and whistles then OEM is probably the way to go so that you can be sure everything can be recalibrated without multiple trips and potentially having to have them change the glass multiple times.

When Satellite asked me for my car insurance coverage details, they then priced the replacement at 25 dollars less than my deductible. Local glass shop did the job for half of what safelite wanted to charge

You happy with the glass shop one?

Binswanger and Safelite are dog shite glass companies owned by penny pinching corporate shite bags.

Who is the best in Lafayette? I need to change out my windshield, too.

I've heard that, too.
"Gonna to recalibrate, yaddy, yadda, yadda..."
Replaced the glass in two German cars, no issues either time, no recalibration...
