Still remember this presser like was yesterday.
I was at LSU during Hallman, and afterwards was cautiously hopeful for Dinardo until he crashed and burned in ‘98.
With Emmett as Chancellor, you had the feeling things would be MUCH better. This clinched it for me as a fan - before he coached a single game.

Joe Dean was a lame duck AD and Emmert basically told Dean to STFU and get out of his way. Dean didn’t want to pay any coach including Saban 7 figures. Emmert’s quote was that the athletic program is the window through which the country viewed a university. I’m paraphrasing but Emmert had a clear vision and understanding of the type of coach needed. Saban was ascending up the ranks and highly respected by football folks in college and the NFL. He was so serious and business like , the BR media and fans weren’t sure what to think of him.

Emmert said Saban interviewed him instead of him interviewing Saban
Saban wanted to know why LSU had constantly under achieved because he felt it was a sleeping giant. He had a lot of demands related to improved facilities and student athlete educational assistance before he would consider taking the job.

It was such a short time people who missed it don’t realize what it was like. Even the couple down years there was a feeling that we could beat anyone and everyone was scared of us. Like please let this guy get taken out of Baton Rouge because if he stays we’re all fricked.

Wow great find! I’ve never been able to find anything on it. Someone get on WBRZ’s case and tell them to release the whole video!

Also, as was stated, Joe Dean was AD, but really in name only for the Saban hire. He had no say on the matter.

I'm assuming brown sport coats were in then?

We also used to mow our lawns in a coat and tie.

He was hired during my last year at LSU. I remember the vast majority of LSU fans not happy about hiring him and his mediocre tenure at Michigan State.
After that 1st Spring Game on a muggy day while he was wearing a turtleneck, a caller on Hanagriff’s show was saying he’d never last and was too ‘different’. Hanagriff responded by saying all that matters is wins.

I remember being at that spring game. Wasn't he also wearing a blazer? I remember thinking holy smokes he must be boiling.
I happened to pass him on campus near the AD building, and noticed him at the very last second. He was short and skinny and looked totally different than on TV. I was like WTF was that really Saban?

Sounds familiar.

About a week after he was hired, Saban and the Chancellor flew to DC to meet with the Louisiana State Society of Washington DC. I was a member at the time. I went to the meeting. There were maybe 75 of us. I talked to Saban for about 15 minutes. I could tell he felt uncomfortable among all the politicians. We had a really good conversation. I knew LSU was in good hands. After that he just stood off to the side and made small talk. The whole event lasted maybe an hour. It was like a Tuesday at noon so a regular work day for people in DC. Really neat experience.

I was living in Indiana at the time (Big 10 country) and I was really excited LSU hired Nick Saban. Not that I knew many coaches but I remember talking to colleagues and the initial thing I said (without much thought) was if there's a coach out there who is a young Vince Lombardi it's Nick Saban and the guy agreed.
