In the Slavic world things are generally taken at face value. Whereas we habitually tell nice white lies.

Edit - to give you sense of how they think one Russian general famously said “no one ever got anything done by speaking softly in French.” There’s some bravado behind that, but you can take it literally for the most part. Empty words are considered pointless in their culture.
This is also why they don’t do small talk. They also don’t understand the purpose.

Anyone with any political savvy could see this. The United States was never going to allow Ukraine to join NATO no matter how much we were hinting at it publicly. I feel as if the whole goal of the Russo-Ukraine War, from our perspective, was to keep Ukraine in the fight to bloody the Russians and weaken them militarily.
