Lot's of chatter lately about Milam at SS. The whole crew on Mikie Mahtook show believes he will start there. Jay Johnson, who was on the show, mentioned that Milam was his best defender and wanted to see him on the left side.

Here are my thoughts and observations. Milam, Braswell and Dickinson all belong at 2B and that is probably where they will be in the pros. Milam is a very good defender but probably has some limitations on his arm and range. I do believe they are adequate enough that he could play SS at a high level, but there are limitations. Braswell played SS last year and Jay has mentioned they have worked on some things to improve his defense. I believe Braswell could also play SS at a high level but has his limitations as well. Dickinson, not surprisingly, played SS in highschool but mostly played 2B in college before LSU.

I went out early to watch the players practice before the fall scrimmages started. Milam, Hogg, Dickinson and another player that I can't remember were taking grounders from the SS position. Dickinson had like three errors in about 20 attempts and my thoughts were "no way is he going to be our SS". When the scrimmages started in the fall, it was mostly Dickinson getting the first looks and he did look a lot better. I remember him making a couple of nice double plays and showing some range. He is faster than Braswell and Milam. The only error that I recall him making in the fall actually came from 2B.

Milam was supposed to get some time on the left side of the infield towards the end of fall, but got sick and was shut down before that ever materialized.

So I have a lot of questions. I didn't see Dickinson play much 3B in the fall if he played any. Is 3B an option for Dickinson? If Dickinson isn't an option at 3B and Jay has some concerns about him at SS that would put him at 2B by default. That would mean Milam and Braswell at SS and 3B. Perhaps Jay feels Braswell is better suited at 3B than Milam which would put Milam at SS almost by default.

Then we have the question "Is Milam a better SS than Braswell?" Jay obviously didn't feel he was last year, but things change in a year. Jay did mention on the show that Milam was his best defender.

I expect Jay to tinker with the different combinations early in the year before actually settling on an answer. I personally feel that when the dust settles, it will be Dickinson at 3B, Braswell at SS and Milam at 2B. I do have to admit it will be exciting to see Milam play SS and maybe he exceeds my expectations there.

It's going to be fun to see this play out and I was curious of what you guys are seeing and predicting.

I’ll wait and see how it all plays out in the first few games.

Until I see it happen differently, I don’t question anything about Mr. Ball Don’t Lie.

Milam's arm and range are adequate enough to play SS at a high level but they are not plus tools. Jordan Thompson for example had a much stronger arm and more range.

Monster will be a good college SS. He will play 2nd in the pros. I trust the guy that has coached and won in Omaha.

I do not agree. Milam was a true freshman last year and saw nothing to indicate this. He can play SS at a high level in college. He is incredibly fluid and quick in the field. Last year was absolutely smooth in the field definitely more than Braswell.

He had unrealized potential at LSU.

I think Milam will ultimately be fine, but I think Dickinson has better potential and has more range than Milam.

Prefer someone with more length but shows Jay doesn’t have an ideal candidate.

Infield defense has been shaky since Jay arrived. You can tell it’s just not a focus when building his teams

I think Jay knows more than me. So, I'll let him sort it out.

I do hope they ditch that over exaggerated shift in the middle of the the infield that they used last year. It sure seemed we shifted ourselves out of position to make a play, far more than shifting into position.

3B Braswell
SS Milam
2B Dickinson

…seems to be the chalk at this point.

I know this is a message board but if you think you know more than JJ on who should be playing SS then you are insane.

JJ watches this guy everyday and if he wants him at SS then he is the best SS he has.

I'm not sure where you get I feel I know more than Jay, but okay.

Some thoughts to ponder. If Jay felt Milam was a potential starter at SS for 2025, why didn't Jay give Milam some garbage time, developmental time in 2024? Keep in mind, he didn't know he would get Braswell back at the time. Rumors were that the staff felt Kucherak was the future at SS.

If Jay felt Milam was his starting SS going into the fall, why did he give Dickinson the first crack at it?

Why is Milam considered a better pro prospect at 2B rather than SS? Could it be that he has some limitations at SS?

That being said, let me make myself clear. I do feel Milam can play SS in the SEC at a high level.

Ideally, I think Jay wants to keep Milam at 2B. However, it is possible that Dickinson didn't pass the audition there in the fall and was moved to 2B. If you are going to move Milam from his natural position of 2B, where do you put him?

In some ways it would be strange to put Braswell at 3B and Milam at SS when Jay didn't even experiment with that combination in 2024. However Jay has publicly stated recently that he feels Milam is his best defender. It is entirely possible that Milam has passed up Braswell in this regard. It's also possible that Jay would rather Braswell at 3B over Milam.

Yes Jay will figure it out and yes Milam could be our best option there. I just don't think it is settled yet.

Braswell came on strong late last year. I'm good with him at SS, but certainly trust the staff's decision.

Moot point. A lot of thought considering Braswell is going to start at SS.

Is 3B an option for Dickinson?
Johnson made the rounds on podcasts this week and basically said he is locked in at 2B.

I guess anything can happen once the season starts if one or both of the other two can’t handle the left side.
