I had planned to but someone made the point that it may be bland and not taste very good to someone from LA.

So is it good or not?

I had a buddy up there for work. He bought some at the dock and flew an ice chest down when he came home. It was incredible. A different experience, for sure. Something fun to get just to tell the story.

I suspect that up there, they just called it King crab

Just get some and devour it, I can’t imagine it tasting worse

King crab dipped in butter with a little Tony's mixed in is delicious. I also like to put them on the smoker.

King crab is good. Like most places outside of LA, it's going to be steamed with no seasoning, and you dip in drawn butter. Crab has a good natural flavor, which is why it is so expensive.

I don't think I've ever had any type of crab and not enjoyed it.

King Crab tastes great but it is like pretty much any other seafood in that it will take on the flavor of whatever you prep it with. Texture and heartiness though is great.

Lived up there for a few years. It's very good, but I preferred dungeoness.

This is exactly what you can expect in Alaska.

Were they still really expensive in Alaska? I think I paid around 100 for some from Costco a year or two ago.

King crab can be boiled in salt only and then dipped in butter.

I find that you only need to boil lobster and all the bigger crabs in salt. Any other seasoning take away from the natural flavor. It's not like crawfish.

We did the famous Tracy Kings in Juneau during an Alaskan cruise and it was fantastic albeit very pricy.

I lived in Ketchikan, AK for a while back in the 80s. I don’t remember king crab being a big thing. Salmon on the other hand, especially smoked salmon, was huge.

It's not meant to be cooked like we cook our crabs, or crawfish, or shrimp. I never had it in Alaska, but I had king crab in Seattle when LSU played Washington in 2009. I thought it was excellent. Oh, and one was plenty enough to fill up both me and my dad.

King Crab harvest has been shut down in Alaska for a few years now. I think its coming back this year. But I think I read somewhere that they were actually importing King Crab into alaska from somewhere else for the last two seasons. I went on cruises to Alaska in both 2023 and 2024 and the prices were too high for me to partake in eating King crab. Fish and Chips were great in Alaska.

When I moved here 30 years ago you could dive and keep 5 king crab per day. My kids would name them, we would race them on the floor then throw them in the pot. Still remember the kids mortified faces... We still have a fishery here, though the season is short and changes year to year.

Yes, they were still really expensive. Maybe more so than in the lower 48.
