SEC Basketball Observation

LSU lost to both Mizzou (unranked) on the road and Ole Miss at home. Both of those teams beat top 5 teams in UF and Bama, respectively on the road last night.
While LSU is a bottom third SEC team, in my opinion the margin between the bottom third and middle is closer than what most think.

We’re bad, but not that bad.

I feel bad for CMM. He has steadily improved his team every year. In most other conferences, this LSU team is a borderline tourney team (imo) but the SEC this year is a juggernaut and he might lose a TON of games with his best team.

5 or 6 SEC wins
16 or 17 win season

With the difference between most of the SEC teams, and our lack of SEC starter qualify front court depth, Reed's loss seems big. He is the only big that can score consistently, and did everything else pretty well. Fountain, R. Miller and Chest are close, but shouldn't be starters at this point. Thankfully we have starting level depth in the backcourt, and Collins is awesome at everything except outside shooting. If our guards play at least as well as they did last night, then we have enough of a front court to be competitive with most teams.

People don’t care to hear it but losing Reed killed this teams chances of doing anything. He’s the only player on the roster capable of winning in isolation consistently. Also frees up Sears/Carter on the outside

I like it when people blow the smoke of positivity up our arse when we suck

I’m by no means am saying LSU is good. It was just an “observation”. The one thing about basketball that has never changed is great guard play and interior defense will keep you in a ton of games. It looked like the rotation last night really came to play. While not perfect, they were disruptive defensively.

In year 3, why aren't we the team squeeking out road victories against middling SEC teams, and going on the road and beating top 10 teams like Mizzou and Ole Piss are doing in their 3rd and 2nd year of a new coach, or ranked in the top 25 like UF, UGA, and MSU with their 3rd year of a new coach?
If we were closer to the middle of the pack SEC teams, then we should win at least 6 conference games, which we are unlikely to go. If we won 4+ i'd be somewhat surprised.

Maybe he should've stayed at Murray State

With how tough the SEC is teams are going to overlook LSU and treat them as a respite. LSU might get some closer than expected games out of that before they ultimately lose.

Way to hijack this thread.
It was about observations of teams in the SEC and not Matt McMahon’s coaching. I don’t care for him but can see why the team is where they are when considering who they lost from a team with minimal help in the front court.
A more meaningful argument would be for you to compare NIL and coaches salaries to the Q1 SEC programs. If you find underperformance, then call it out. Until then, state something worth reading.

Based on what? We have zero quad 1 wins and have not even been competitive in any of those games.

sorry for observing other SEC basketball teams, similar to LSU, and comparing them to LSU. Maybe you should have posted this on the SECrant instead, or maybe not start your thread saying that LSU lost to Ole Miss and Mizzou and they went and beat top 5 teams on the road last night if you didn't want to have a conversation about comparing LSU to other SEC schools.
Why don't we just look at recruiting?
2024 247 rankings
Mizzou 6th
UGA 10th
LSU 15th
MSU 43rd
Ole MIss 51st
2023 247 rankings
UGA 15th
Mizzou 27th
MSU 36th
LSU 50th
Ole Miss 54th
2022 247 rankings
LSU 17th
Ole Miss 25th
Mizzou 39th
UGA 86th
MSU 91st
Man we seem to be way behind those other teams in recruiting
oh but there's this transfer portal stuff to now, so let's look at those rankings too.
2024
Mizzou 13th
Ole Miss 16th
UGA 39th
MSU 43rd
LSU 63rd
2023
Ole Miss 11th
LSU 17th
UGA 29th
Mizzou 42th
MSU 58th
are you seriously going to tell me that we don't have the NIL funds to match Mississippi State and Ole Miss and UGA and MIzzou in basketball?
I'm not comparing them to Q1 programs though, am I.
You think paying a guy $2.7M instead of $3.2M is that big a of a difference? He's making more than Wade was making. I guess what you're saying is we should let him go and go find a guy to give $3.5-$4.0M a year to.

frick that. This ain't USC or UCLA and the school just switched conferences on him. Texas and OU came in but they're both middle of the pack. It's the same job he signed up for, if it's too tough go back to the OVC.

Men’s Basketball NIL budget is $1.5 mil and 15th out of 16th in the SEC, only Vandy is worst. Awful when you consider how much money our athletic department has.
