But this is embarrassing. I guess I would care more if THEY did.

I’d care about basketball if LSU was competitive. I’m not a hater but this basketball not showing signs of improvement.

McMahon just can’t get over that hump and field a consistent team. It sucks because he checks every other box.

Agreed. The SEC being completely stacked is adding fuel to this fire, and Reed getting injured was the cherry on top back breaker. I actually like CMM, but I am not sure he can survive what is coming. 1 or 2 SEC wins seems like the scenario we are facing

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?
What box(es) does he check? Showing up to the games on time?
With last night's loss his LSU career record against major conf. opponents falls to 17-35 (.326). That's kind of a big deal since, you know, LSU is a major conference program who has to play the majority of their games against other major conf. programs. Unfortunately, there is very real reason to think that number is the loss column is about to balloon significantly in the next 2.5 months.
Setting aside the raw W/L numbers, his teams at LSU have not been very good. Basketball has a lot of great predictive data to evaluate how good teams are. In fact, that data is now incorporated in the official metrics used by the selection committee in selecting the NCAA Tournament field each year. Even with last season's "great" performance LSU finished 99th in both offensive and defensive efficiency. That's in the bottom 1/2 of all major conf. teams. The year before they were one of the 5-10 worst major conf. teams in all of college basketball. This year they are ALREADY at 99th in offensive efficiency. In large part that is because, once again, with almost an entirely new roster, they are one of the worst teams in the nation in turnovers.
If recruiting rankings are of any value (and history says they are to some degree) McMahon hasn't been all that bad of a recruiter...which seems to suggest the issue is more on the coaching side. Even last season, there just isn't a lot his LSU teams do well. They have often been equally as weak defensively and offensively. And that his now over the span of 2.5 years with vastly different rosters each year.
So what is the more logical outlook? Keep turning over the roster each year in hopes that he may luck into one good enough to truly compete at the major conf. level? Or, accept that maybe he "doesn't actually check every other box" and start to look for a new HC that does?

And still keep turning over the basketball.
If they cut back on the turnovers and rebounded better we’d surely trend up. But it just isn’t happening.

Basketball at LSU is not a priority.

coach sucks, pmac is quiet, no exciting players, the product is stale...

Alienating people who agree with you by being an a-hole isn't the move.
But to answer your question: He recruits well, loves the school, and is a great representative of LSU. He just isn’t winning.

I was honestly looking forward to catching the game last night before bed then that dumb Kentucky game dragged out and by the time it came on, LSU was getting smoked.
Not gonna be a great season. Nobody cares about men’s basketball. It’s by far our least impressive sport and it’s so frustrating because how hard can it be to make the damn ncaa tournament once every 2 or 3 seasons?
We don’t have to be a powerhouse but damnit let’s just be respectable.

These idiots just hear a small little piece of something they agree with, and run with it forever.
Don't ya know that Wade can't coach AT ALL despite what he's done every MOTHERFLUCKING place he's been, and he's a great recruiter but only by cheating, because everyone knows almost all of the top players attended college without illegal inducements (besides Wade' programs).
It's really quite entertaining watching them twist themselves into pretzels to support their INACCURATE theories (with little to no factual support) regarding basketball.

My apologies if you were offended. I guess the forcefulness of my post was to illustrate the absurdity of the statement that essentially he checks all of the boxes...except actually winning basketball games...which I think is probably a pretty important box to check for a basketball coach.

If that is "every other box" except winning then maybe he'd be wiling to stick around as a school ambassador giving tours to parents of prospective students. Or, perhaps, dress up like Mike the Tiger at games. Unfortunately, most fans would prefer him to just win rather than "love the school".

Hire a coach with an actual APPROACH to the game. With Oats you know he is going to recruit shooters and go up and down the floor. With K Sampson, he is going to recruit weight room defenders and suck the life out of teams. Etc, etc. McMahons teams have no style approach, or will to assert. I have no clue what his teams are trying to do or what the winning formula is. Please just bring some kind of style back to the Pmac.

I wouldn’t. I’d be fine if LSU just stopped playing shooty hoops completely.

But this is embarrassing. I guess I would care more if THEY did.
You "guess" you would care more. Ok, let's examine that, and the overall situation...
Football is extremely hard to succeed in, takes a huge investment, and pays out great IF you can succeed. LSU is committed. People are pissed because we went 9-4 in the SEC this year, following a pair of 10 win seasons. We ARE successful (in the big picture), and close enough to the top that we can strategize how to get even better.
After football, there's Men's Basketball. That's also very hard to succeed in, possibly more competitive since there are so many schools that just can't challenge in football. Kansas, Duke, Arizona, North Carolina, UConn, etc. Basketball is their primary marketing and publicity sport, and for UConn and many others, it's their primary moneymaker. They HAVE to do well, or their AD tanks.
Outside of that, there are niche sports, where if you have the resources you can excel. Baseball, women's basketball, probably T&F, Hockey, Softball, gymnastics etc. They get you publicity and visibility, but no money directly (but the visibility does keep your name out there, so it helps indirectly). Stanford used to thrive with that, winning all sorts of titles.
LSU is moving well in that area, with baseball, now women's basketball, gymnastics etc.
Men's basketball isn't in that group- you have to dump a lot more into the pot to compete, and I think the AD figures it just isn't worthwhile. We wouldn't get the same ROI with men's basketball as we do with baseball + women's basketball + gymnastics.
