The kids want a dog but I have a major hang up.

The poor thing will be home alone all day M-F from 7-5. I don't think that's fair to the dog and I can't do it.
We had a good dog that developed depression when I had to stop working from home, to the point we had to rehome him for his health. He now has a full time companion (senior) at home with him all the time.
Am I making a bigger deal about this? A dog home by itself all the time kenneled or even alone just seems like trouble.
I'm pretty firm on this but will listen to other reasonable arguments.

Depends on the dog and your residence. House? Apartment? Backyard? Doggy door possible? And why are kids not around from 7-5? They work the coal mines?

House, a couple acres, no doggy door. My kids are 3 and 2. Mom and I work all day.

Get two… problem solved.
Disclaimer: neither of these pathetic creatures are mine. The pug is my daughter’s and the white one is a Chihuahua/Maltese mix and is my wife’s lapdog. They both hate each other, or ant least the white one hates the pug, and are at the same time inseparable.

I’m not going to lie, those look like a couple of annoying pain in the asses.

That pugs entire body is the foreskin for its face.

Fence in a yard, install a doggy door, adopt two dogs (preferably siblings) so they're not alone. Also, avoid overactive breeds, get something small and lazy. Done and done.
Or get a cat.

Just need to find the right dog. Don’t rush out and get one.
Find a good boy who is a few years old and just needs a new home. A 4-5 year old dog will sleep the majority of the day while you are away.
My first dog post college was a golden retriever that was needing to be refined because the family’s elderly grandmother was moving in with them. It was a perfect match. He lived another 6 years with me before he passed. I miss that dog to this day

That's an understandable concern and something that tricky to figure out. I have a dog that's home alone from 6:30-5:00 during the work week. However I have a dog walker that comes around everyday @ noon to walk, pet, and give her streats for 30 minutes. My dog doesn't have bad separation anxiety, so the arrangement works for her while I feel better knowing she is getting excercise out in the sun (while I'm stuck in the office haha).
You kinda have to get the dog to trust you before you would leave it alone in the house. If it's bot working you can try out dog daycare, but it's expensive.

Don’t get a puppy, get an older dog that just sleeps all day. That’s what my labs do when we not home for 8 hours everyday.

Dogs are pack animals. They generally do better when they have a companion. If your dog is alone for a full work day, you may want to train them to use doggie pads. How about adopting a buddy for your dog from a local shelter? If your dog has alot of energy, try taking it for a long walk or jog before work. Prayers for your success. Happy New Year!

Get 2 dogs. Can they be outside during the day?

Damn dog probably found its way into aspirin bottle when you gave it away. Your dog misses you too much so you gave it away??? Make sense totally.
You shouldn’t have a dog.

Call me old school, but kenneling a dog isn’t a big deal. Also, a doggy door into a fenced area is ideal.

Well, jackass. We spent about $2,500 trying to figure out what was wrong with the dog until we landed on his environment.
We made the necessary change. arse.

I know lots of people who do this and their dogs are perfectly fine.

I think that’s sort of a unique situation. If you were to start working from home again, I’d keep the dogs routine and try to work in a separate area of the house if you have that option.

I have a dog that stays home while I work four days per week, but two of those days I put him in dog day care where he plays his heart out and is exhausted the following days. So I've developed a schedule and he's basically only home two days per week all day. I do make it a point that once I get home and he's been home all day, we go right outside and play frisbee. That might be difficult given the ages of your kids who will also demand attention and not yet at an age where they can help with caring for the animal.

We foster a lot of dogs. Unfortunately, most of them are kept separate from us during their time we have them.
I don't ever see any adverse conditions develop with them.
However, we never keep them alone for 8 hours .
Worst case is 4 hours and we come home for lunch to let them outside, etc.
IMO, a dog that only is up for multiple hours most of the days, but not all, is not necessarily a deal breaker.
Let's face it, we as humans will pen ourselves in a stupid cubicle for the same amount of time a week having to do work. The dog only has to sit and wait.
