Depends on the dog. We have two that are alone from 7-5 during the day. My dog stays outside if it's not too hot. When she's inside she sleeps on her bed in the living room all day, I can check in with the cameras and she looks like she's enjoying the hell out of herself. My wife's dog puts himself in his kennel when we leave and he doesn't come out until one of us gets home. Dogs sleep a hell of a lot.
It's only a problem if you end up getting a dog with bad separation anxiety. From the start we kennel trained our dogs and made sure they were spending time without us being around. I leave my dog in the backseat of my truck while I hunt and she just curls up to sleep because she knows and trusts I'll be back to get her.

Some of y'all must not be married...when I say the kids that are 3 and 2 want a dog, it really means...
Mom wants a dog.
That's EXACTLY the point I made in my above post. It's not so much the kids as it is the Mrs. who wants one.
Chances are, by the time the kids are 12 and 13, the dog will either be dead or close to it---------another of life's harsh lessons.

Get a Bassett hound. Laziest dogs ever and don’t mind solitude. Just install a dog door

I'm pretty sensitive to animals. You also have to worry about it being ignored at home. People are tired when they get home. Kids get used to the dog.

Dogs are fine being home alone while we’re at work mine aren’t “depressed”. That’s some new age bullshite if you’re diagnosing your dog with mental disorders

I had a dog and all he wanted to do was watch tv and if you left him outside chase tail. He never barked unless he was scared which was rare.

Get two dogs. Make sure they stay in the backyard 100% of the time. It’s easy. Our dogs have never set foot in my house and never will.
Remember a dog is a pet and is your entertainment, not the other way around. I have been so busy with work that I have not hardly even pet our dogs in weeks. Those days I just feed and water them at night. The dogs play with each other. They are fine and living a great dog’s life. Don’t make it complicated.

Had 1 dog who had severe anxiety when we left. Adopted another dog and all anxiety went away. They are inseparable now.
2 was definitely easier than 1. Parents also got brothers that are inseparable.
Put some beds in the backyard and just leave them outside all day or doggy door.
Adopt 2 rescues that are used to each other. The workers will know which dogs like each other

quote:So, you got rid of a dog because you felt you couldnt take care of it adequately, now you are looking for advice on getting another dot?
The poor thing will be home alone all day M-F from 7-5. I don't think that's fair to the dog and I can't do it.
We had a good dog that developed depression when I had to stop working from home,

When I had two schnauzers, they stayed in the house. When I added two more and rescued two pugs, I built a 12x80 climate controlled home for them where they have controlled access to the fenced in yard but 24/7 access to an area to “do their business.” Everyone’s happy. I rotate which comes in the house at night and everyone is happy.

One of the biggest blessings of having 3 roommates is they all give my Aussie attention while I’m gone. Now if I moved on my own I’d feel guilty about leaving him all day but I try to come back for lunch and tire him out. Doggy door into a fenced area would make me feel better but he’s an escape artist so it would impact my peace of mind.
