Happy New Year OB friends and colleagues!

I've retired and down sized. I live on a great crappie lake and the fall/winter fishing has been awesome. Part of the downsizing, I departed with all my reloading equipment.

I used to reload everything shot shells for expense and rifle for quality. I've been taking my granddaughter deer hunting and she's using my old Win 270. She's been shooting factor loads and I'm not impressived with the work on the business end. The rifle has a 20" barrel and groups Federal Fusion 130gr reasonably tight.

My question, is there a premium over the counter load any of you are particularly fond of, or is there a handload that is your go to favorite?

Thanks in advance for any information you are willing to share.

110 gr Barnes TTSX. H4350. Near max load.

This will fly at around 3400 to 3500 fps. At 300yds or less, a deer has no chance. The 130s on up are better for long range.

These lightning bolts are devastating. I'm loading them in a 26in custom 270win. My kids have upmost confidence in these little 110gr bullets.

Norma whitetail 130gr produces half inch groups out of both my ruger m77 and tikka. I’ve shot a dozen does that have either bang flopped or passed through. Two bucks one passed through and went 30 yards, the other was opposite hide and he was in his tracks.

Nosler Trophy Grade ammo; between the BTs, ABs, and partitions, somethings gotta work for such a great whitetail cartridge. Also try Norma whitetail Tipstrikes. I buy their 280 Rems to load for my Ackley, but they group very well when fire forming.

Before I started handgun hunting deer, I used a Winchester M70 in 270 Winchester that my dad gave to me when I was in high school. Except for the first few years, I always used handholds. I initially used the 130 gr Hornady spire point, then the Sierra 140 gr GameKing. After had a jacket/core separation, I moved on to the 140 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. I had good results w/ the NBT. I think the key to the NBT is not pushing the bullet over 3000 fps. When not pushed too hard, they penetrate well. There's been nearly 200 years of bullet development w/ the 270. Consequently, while premium bullets will kill a deer, they're not usually necessary. Conventional cup/core bullets usually work well. I used IMR 4350, IMR 4831 and Reloder 22 for my handholds. If you find yourself looking for reduced loads for your daughter H4895 is a fine choice w/ lots of loads on the Hodgdon site. I saw tonight that the newest Hodgdon annual hand loading manual has a section for educed loads. Good for you taking your granddaughter hunting. I wish you good fortune.

Speer hot cor 130gr over IMR 4064. Deadly and very accurate out of my dads old model 700.

Always liked Jack's compressd load for my Sako .270, shoots different than all others for some reason, just have watch pressure signs as you walk up. My favorite

Quote: Jack O'Connor wrote of loading his .270s a bit hotter than I do. His load was 62 grains of H4831 pushing a 130-grain bullet at about 3,200 fps. He must have used a super drop tube for those loads as that has to be a really compressed load.

My old Winchester M70 featherweight loves 49.5 grains of IMR 4064 with a 130 grain Speer hot cor. The deer hate it tho.

Federal premiums nosier partion wrecks them if your gun likes them. And don’t sleep on a rem corelokt.

There shouldn’t be a business end problem with a fusion out of a .270.
What kind of problems are you having in the field?

4831 and .270 win go together. I have two .270s, one is shooting 140 grain hornady BTSP with 54 grains of IMR 4831 and the other 140 speer trophy bonded with 57 grains of H4831SC. I think the Jack O’connor load was a 130 partition and 62 grains of H4831SC.

We shot everything and ended back at the 130 partitions, about perfect for southern whitetail.

In my experience, basically any 130gr bullet at .270 speeds will wreck deer. Lately some people have been switching to the deer season XP's and they're downright nasty. Not reliable exits but I don't know that I've had to trail any yet.

My personal favorite used to be the federal power shok 130gr. I found they exited more reliably than other basic bullets and shot well.

Federal Premium 130 Nosler Partition is my go to round.
I shot Trophy Bonded Bear Claw for years but they got hard to find for me.

I’ve been reloading 270 for years and settled on 150 gr, Partitions over a max load of H4831. More bullet than needed but they never fail to pass through and leave a blood trail if tracking is needed.

Thank you SaintsFan.
Many years ago, I loaded some 100 or 110 gr bullets. My wife and I killed several deer with the load. The internal organs were liquefied with well placed shots to the chest cavity. My concern was that the bullet never reached the rib cage of the opposite side. With the Barn's bullet do do get pass through?
