WCJB news story

Finally downgraded to intermediate care unit after 13 days in MICU and 88 vials of antivenin. They were able to save his leg, though he currently can’t move his foot - hoping for a return of function with time and physical therapy.

And he was not handling the snake - didn’t even see it and it didn’t rattle. He was peeking behind loose bark looking for a scarlet kingsnake and didn’t notice the EDB before it tagged him.

I saw that video a day or two ago. Had no idea he was looking for other snakes.

Was he not wearing snake boots while looking for snakes?

Glad he’s okay. Sounds like he has a long recovery ahead of him. But…

Not sure I agree with him getting bitten by a snake while snake hunting and then wanting everyone else to pay his medical bills.

agree but he isn't forcing anyone to pay

if you are one of his followers and love watching him do dumb shite with dangerous animals, then maybe you own him a few shekels

Article got that detail wrong - he & his wife did not set up the gofundme. Others set it up for him. His church and the herping community are both very supportive of their members. It would be different if he were free-handling the snake, but this was a very casual outing taking a couple friends from his church on their first nature excursion. They stopped for a turtle in the road, then he saw the tree and decided to check the loose bark.

2 of the EDB of 5 I encountered in Florida(in the 80s) did not rattle at all. 1 of the others did not rattle till I got about 5 feet away.

And I knowingly accept the risks of death or serious injury - just like when I raced dirt bikes. Some hobbies have risks.

These people go around picking up venomous snakes with their bare hands. I doubt they concern themselves with snake boots.

I picked up a box of snake shot at Academy this week. Damn that shite has gotten expensive. $22.99 for a box of 10, 38 Special.

Whats that? like 100million dollars?

Story further confims my commitment to removing the heads of every one I find around my home. This is despite getting shite from some of my naturalist family members complaining that rattlesnakes have every right to live as anyone else.

They are dangerous to me, my people and my animals.

I'll step around them when on public land though.

When you go out looking for snakes, sometimes the snake will find you.

You too will get bitten one day picking up and playing with venomous snakes.

He should be very thankful he wasn’t allergic to the antivenom. The one you don’t see. Masters of camouflage.
I treat snakes like I treat electricity. LOTS OF RESPECT.

And I thought my luck with both my daughters cars costing me thousands this weekend was bad. But yes this aint gonna be cheap and he’ll tap his lifetime limits probably

My friends 9 yr old daughter got hit by a copperhead and insurance refused to pay for several of the last vials they had to give her

Glad to know this guy is gonna make it. Gnarly

That's going to be one hell of a hospital bill.

He did have an allergic reaction to the bite, probably due to previous bites by a Trans-Pecos copperhead and a pygmy rattler (for which he had around 12 vials of antivenin). Felt his airway closing on the way to the fire station. They hit him with epinephrine on the helicopter ride.

I know someone who got bitten by a timber rattler because he was a dumbass and tried to pick it up. It was an expensive lesson. He racked up over $100,000 in medical bills. Despite pretty good insurance it cost him over $20,000 out of pocket.
