One phrase that comes to mind for me is "Trust, but verify"
Look, if we are having to verify something to me that means we ain't really trusting it too much. Am I missing something here?

Circle back doesn't annoy me. Is "I wanted to come back around to ______" better?
Gaslighting is used incorrectly a lot, but when used correctly it's a very convenient way to talk about "thing" people know of, can observe, etc. but that might otherwise be hard to quickly describe.

I wish Yes sir, no sir, yes maa'm, no maa'm, please and thank you would come back! So many rude disrespectful little punks being raised out there. I felt sick this Christmas having to hear all the little ones complain, talk back, and just be flat out ungrateful during this family holiday season! I threatened one of the family teenagers I would take their art set I got them back to the store if they didnt say thank you and quit complaining and being ungrateful! Just sad times were living in

Whenever I hear this, I think, "obviously not the inside of an English book."

I always took it as kinda tongue in cheek.
Also “tongue in cheek” is pretty dumb.
