Short story, my employer gave out $200 gift cards at Kroger for Thanksgiving and $500 at Sams for Xmas. This morning, I looked at my check stub, and they taxed me for it. Basically took out taxes for Uncle Sam. Huh? Please explain

It was part of your compensation, so it gets taxed...

So, I get taxed 100%? Sounds like an advance , to hold someone over, without the viggorish.

I worked for a small company several years back, our president was from Hong Kong and cheap as F$$K.

We would take our top sales people on trips to fancy golf resorts, Vegas etc etc etc

Then he would 1099 em at the end of the year for the cost of their trip

They would all call me raising hell

It gets taxed the same as income. Not an employer thing, a government thing. Thank the IRS.

A bonus is taxable.

These were handed out cards in an envelope.

If they’d given you a $700 bonus check it would’ve been taxable as income. They gave the equivalent dollar amount but in gift cards and thus it was taxable as income. It sucks, but that’s the blood sucking IRS for ya. We have migrants as well as an entire country’s defense and livelihood to support.

But it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Thanks. It's pretty much chicken shite. Should've taken the 5th amendment when it comes to gift cards, and decline.

My company logged any giftcards we got. If we were at a sales meeting and they gave out giftcards for best answers or winning a game you signed for the 25 dollar starbucks card and it went on your paystub.

Were you taxed 100% of the value? Do you know how to read a pay stub?

So you would rather not have the net amount to use after taxes?

This happened to me in the past with a $25 dollar gift card. That's how cheap my damn company is.
