Passenger on an American Airlines flight recorded when a bird struck an engine last night

The last time a flight from LaGuardia to Charlotte had a bird strike, we had the famous Miracle on the Hudson.

Maybe a dumb question but can this sort of thing be preventable or make something that protects the engines from birds?

every time an airport that has a bird problem tries to do something about they get flak/shut down by the tree huggers

Your definition of not frightening and my definition is perhaps not the same. If I hear a racket from the engine just after takeoff and the silence when the pilots shut it down I'm not completely freaking out but I'm not exactly cool as a cucumber either.
