People would counter, "So is Kamala" and they'd be correct. However, Kamala was a Senator (or at least California AG) before she arrived on the national consciousness. People assumed (wrongly) that she wasn't an empty headed moron to rise to those positions. AOC pretty much arrived on scene with the label "stupid bimbo".

The Dems are concerned with 'over reach'. IE, communism must be arrived at gradually over the decades. When you reach too far (Kamala) you ruin the progress. AOC is a communist and she's proud of it. The Dems will choose a moderate. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden were all sold as 'moderates' and won. Obama was sold as Historic.

I disagree with her opinions strongly, but she’s said a good bit of things that, while dumb, indicate that she’s not nearly as bought and paid for as most of them. They all are to some extent, but I’d imagine she doesn’t get more opportunities on the media side of things because she doesn’t play ball as much as they want her to play.
