After seeing the last thread about the 7mm-08, Im heavily considering upgrading my 10-11 yr old boys rifles from their current 350 Legend. Which would the OB recommend with consideration to recoil and longevity of use as they get older. Any help would be appreciated!

If you can add a supressor to whatever you choose it will help them tremendously. Less recoil, noise, all and all a much better exipirience. I find that I grab the gun I bought for my son more than my unsupressed gun. My ears are hosed and I want better for him and to save what I have left.

6.5 PRC is a better option. 143 grain eldx. My daughter is 5’2 and been shooting the round since she was 12..

I’ve got several nice rifle setups with all these fast/flat cartridges but I haven’t hunted with one since buying a CA 16 inch carbon fiber .308 and putting a can on it.

I almost feel like selling all my shite

7mm-08

The amount of deer hunting stories of those who shoot the 6.5cm and lose a blood trail are far too many. It's a fast round and has a purpose. If you are shooting 500-700 yards, in an open area, possibly in the mountains of Idaho, yeah go for the 6.5cm.

If you are Louisiana, where 99% of the deer are going to be killed less than 200 yards away, go with the 7mm-08

That is a function of the bullet not the caliber. A 7mm-08 sst or eldx will probably result in the same outcome.
To the OP either one will be just fine and don’t think of the 7mm08 as a “youth” caliber it’s perfectly fine for almost 98% of the hunters in the woods today (500 yd and less whitetail).
If your hunting thick woods or spots with less than 200yd shots then get a bonded bullet or a copper solid and if they lose a deer it’s not the guns fault.

I have no experience with the 6.5cm, but I'm sure it is a fine caliber. I have a 7mm-08 and can't recommend it enough.

I never want to discourage people from buying guns, but the boys will be ready to handle an adult size rifle around 13. You might want to wait a couple of years.
The needmore was an answer to a question that the deer hunting public didn’t ask. After they buy it, they keep asking about bullets for it, as they aren’t pleased with performance in the field.
I’ve shot a hog and doe with my new 7-08 this year. I really got it to share with my DIL, as she’s also a lefty. Very pleasant to shoot. I know of a Wyoming resident that kills three elk per year with his 7-08.
I sat with my son as he killed around 50 deer with his .308 as a kid. That round is a killer. Arguably the best whitetail round for 95% of the hunting situations in the South.
At 14, I bought son a Vanguard 257 WBY magnum. Magnum ballistics without major recoil. He’s still shooting it at 26.

Don't tell anybody I said this, but the cripplemore is the better choice. Far better ammo and rifle availability. Just be careful with ammo selection, lots of match stuff out there.

I looked into both of these calibers when buying my wife a new deer rifle. Ballistically, using the same weight bullets, they are practically identical. I ended up going with the 6.5 CM due to ammo availability. That's not as important now as it was just a year or two ago though.

I have both
Son shoots 7mm-08 i have found way better blood trails

Daughter shoots 6.5C - Blood trails less than desirable, But I am lucky that we have a guy with a great dog. The dog has no problems finding the deer.
When I clean them there are tore up, for the blood trails i can find.

Both gun I have move to a heavier bullet and both perform well.

Well tell you this either round with well placed shot deer will drop.

But if i had to do over, i woould buy both of them Matching .308's so that i could keep ammo the same

I hunt 7-08, shot a doe with ELDX on Sunday. Was sort of overpowered and luckily I didnt hit the shoulder. Entrance wound bigger then exit and it was pushing the lung out the exit hole. Absolute bloodbath.

Both of my boys have 7-08s. Both have kills with their first shot ever taken on a deer.

I have personally killed several deer with my oldest's 7-08, as I have enjoyed the compact rifle while hunting alone in the woods over the last few years.

Between the 3 of us, we have 6 kills out of 6 shots. All have been within 100 yards.

Bought a 7mm-08 for the wife about 15 years ago. It’s my favorite rifle. It’s killed a bunch of deer and none have ran very far with proper bullet placement. 140 grain bullet

6.5 CM is a fine gun in proper hands and proper bullet. It’s not some magical caliber like some portray

It’s the man bun of rifle calibers

I know Tikka is a good brand….looking to keep it around $500 if possible. Savage or should I just suck it up and get the Tikka?

All about the bullet man. If you get the right bullet I promise you will not be able to tell the difference in the wound that a 7mm-08 makes vs a 6.5 Creedmoor. I’d recommend the Creedmoor for ammo availability, I feel like the rifle ammo shelves are 90% 30-06, 308, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 223. The 6.5 will be on the shelf for awhile and it’ll be cheaper to blast at the range if they decide to.

The reason the Creedmoor has a bad rap is because of bullet selection. For a 30-06 or 308 you can buy ANY bullet that has a deer on the box and go kill without problems. That’s not the case as you get into smaller faster cartridges. It’s best to know your velocity window and try to get a bullet that’ll do what you want in that impact window.

The 243 has the same reputation. You meet some people that have killed hundreds of deer with the right bullet and have no problems and others who lost a deer or two with whatever academy had on the shelf and they’ll curse it as long as they live.

I’ll also echo what others are saying, my 16” tikka 308 with a suppressor is much more pleasant to shoot than my in suppressed 6.5 Creedmoor. If you have the inclination to get a suppressor, they are an awesome upgrade.

Good on you for doing this with your kids. They’ll be happy with whatever you pick.

As long as the shots are inside of 200 yards , just keep rockin with the 350.

6.5 would get my vote. Can't speak to the 7mm-08 though because I haven't shot one. I have a 7mm WSM and love it but man the 6.5 has so much less kick which would be good for an 11 year old and bullet availability.

Though the "cripplemore" is a great nickname, I've never found that to be the case. Outside of the range, my CM has shot at 8 times and it's killed 8 times. Not a single one of them ran further than 30 yards.
