185 yard club

I have been smoking my 5 wood about 205-210.
My irons thru 6 get me to around 175 or so but not consistently that far.
Feel like a little hybrid could fit in there and give me 185-195.

I use a 7 wood for that distance

Try a 5h or a 4h and see which one works best.

I think you are saying your 6 gets you 175 but not consistent. I believe that. 6iron 175 is a pretty good poke. Just smooth 5iron is my 185 club. Just from your comment about 6 iron sounds like a perfect swing and hard gets you 175. I bet if you stop trying to stretch the 6 out to 175 you would be very good and more accurate at 165 to 170. I think we ametures getting within 5 yards of a club is very good.

Same here. It lands very soft and can hold a green nicely.

5-iron unless it’s into the wind. 3-iron then.
It’s gotta be seriously downwind to get a 6 there.

Knockdown 7 or hard 8 depending on the pin position. Swing it like a man

When I was 35 it was an 8.
That was a lot of years and a back surgery ago

Hard 7 or smooth 6.
In your case, maybe look into a srixon zu45, zu65, or zu85 5 iron.

I’m 37 and hit my irons pretty far. It was never an 8 for me unless downwind significantly or I bladed the shite out of it

I do tend to over swing my 6 for some reason. That is a very valid point you just made. And my 5 wood is a smooth swing, defining trying to swing too hard because it could go anywhere.

You definitely need to add something. You might even have a 2 club gap from 6i to 5W. You could consider adding a 5i and 4i/9W.
For reference, after 6i I have 5i, 4i, 7W, 3W.

Look into a 5i UDI. You get a bigger/thicker head iron with a graphite shaft. It's easy to launch and just goes. I just replaced my 4i with one and love it.
A hybrid at that degree of loft is going to look really weird down by the ball.
ETA: 185 is a stock 6i for me.

quote:8 is still a 145-155 club for me. That was a smooth wedge in those days. Me and two other old guys out of a group of around 30 who play together weekly are the only ones who still are hitting 8 for a 150 yard par 3.

No it wasn’t, unless you were one of the longest hitters in the world.
Do you ever hit a bad shot or have a bad round? You seem to be the only 4 handicap in the world that has never shot worse than 75

Sounds like a 7 wood or 5H would work. They'd both probably be a little longer than 185 but you could obviously choke down or back off a little.
A 5 iron would get you there but a 5H is probably going to be easier to hit/more forgiving. But will give you a little more distance than a 5I.

quote:Yes it was. Pros on the senior tour still hit it that far. Used to play with one of them till he left for college. Yes that was a long time ago.

quote:Yep, about the only the only time I hit a really bad shot is when I’m playing scramble though and try something I normally wouldn’t. I just don’t have a big range on my rounds anymore. I also don’t try and play the tips at my age just to prove something. I couldn’t reach the fairway on Judge #7 from back there.

quote:You know how handicaps work right? The 79 I shot on the 16th and the 81 on the Judge on the 4th don’t have the impact the three 74’s, the three 76’s, the 77, the 73 and the 69 do sandwiched around and between them.

I don’t miss many fairways (I pointed out how getting a club fitting helps months ago) and i know my yardages (thank you launch monitor). My misses are probably better than yours because of those 2 things.
I pulled up my last recordings to illustrate. 146-154 was the range on the 8. 124-129 for the PW, 131-137 for the 9.
I’m not guessing with a club anymore.

I'd honestly say try a 7w or 9w see which one hits that number for you.. I just never liked hitting a hybrid. I swapped my 3h for 7w because I got a little more distance (consistently) and much more spin.. and with my more shot shape being a fade I can hit a pretty high cut fade the the 7w going into greens
