In the movie they'll probably show the undercover FBI agent in then McDonalds line nudging the employee and going "doesn't that look like the guy" before quietly exiting while the employee phones the police

a reminder: 2,000 state and federal LEOs combed through a Boston neighborhood for 48 hours looking for one of the Marathon bombers, then gave up and dispersed. A retired plumber found the guy in his back yard in a boat, six blocks from where he was last seen.

The FBI is hated by many local LEO. They are famous for coming in at the last minute to take credit for locals solving the crimes. Happened in BR Derrick Todd Lee. The FBI and the fatass BR chief took the credit when actually two small town detectives solved it.

Ding ding ding!!! Whenever you see a local bank robbery or equivalent crime and the FBI says, "With assistance from local authorities" what they really mean is "the sheriff's office/police department carried the ball to the 1-yard line and then we scored the TD".

We had the I-75 shooter back in September. Dude went missing for over a week. FBI, KSP and ATF deployed search teams and helicopters with FLIR.
They called off the search. A couple days later, a late middle aged couple that has a YouTube channel found his body in a ravine, less than a mile from his sniper position.
They used the advanced technology of watching buzzards circling overhead.
So, the McDonalds story does not surprise me
