My company requires your attendance at our Christmas party because when they didn't, very few people came.

They hold it an hour from where most employees live, in a small town, with no entertainment or anything, so it's just a slog to go.

If I'm not being paid then it's not mandatory.

If it is "required", doesn't it also count towards hours worked by law?

I was once told by my boss to go to the Christmas party and to tell those who reported to me to go. I told him I would encourage the others to go, but I would not even be thinking about this company on the day the 1989 Iron Bowl was played. I would be in the stadium.

He was not a football fan. He did not understand it at all. No matter. I was there.

If you have to require people to attend your party, then you’re doing the party wrong.

"Required" company Christmas party
Yes and No. I am required to go to the party, but depending where/when it's scheduled I don't make my team attend. They have held it in years past ~20 minutes off-site after hours or on the day before most people take off in which case I would let team members who "couldn't make it" miss. When discussed I made it clear that I would not require accommodations on my team's behalf to make it as it was not conducive to my departments morale nor the company's best interest. They have gotten better the past two years holding it earlier and dismissing work early on a Friday so that the party begins around 3-4. Spouses/partners are welcome, but if the point of the party is to celebrate as a team and not just so Suzy can get drunk and make out with Gary while their spouses are at home with the kids. Then the company should accommodate, not the employees.

Yes.

Well… sort of. If we go they let us leave after. If we don’t we work the full day.

Why do I have to go to your company's Christmas party?

Mine isn’t required but they fly me up there for it. I rack up SkyMiles and Marriott points to use on personal trips.

When I was a student worker at college, our dept.(photog, media, TV etc.) had a Christmas lunch. I was strongly advised by my supervisor to attend. He didn't really care, but I assume the Dept head wanted a strong turnout. Non issue to me.

That was the first one played at Jordan Hare...so I don't blame you...but also, who in the HELL has their Christmas Party on December 2nd?

We had one of those on a Friday night at a last company. They also got upset if spouses didn’t attend
