It's in the Game: Madden NFL (Amazon Documentary on EA Sports/Madden)

As a kid growing up in the 90's and Madden being about the only game I played, it was a pretty fun 4 episode documentary. Pretty cool behind the scenes look at it's early stages up until today.
Never knew that Joe Montana football was basically the same exact game except dumbed down on purpose by EA so Madden would be the better game.
They went into detail about the competition Madden has had throughout the years and I forgot just how good NFL2K on Dreamcast was. It was for sure a better game at the time but I never knew what was the death of them or kept up with that because I'm not really a gamer. NFL basically didn't like that 2K put the game on sale for $20 (which worked and sold a lot of games because of it) so they stripped the licensing from them and that was a death note. So killed off that competition despite it being the better game. After that, Madden never really had any legit competitor.
Was cool to see how involved Madden was with it as well. That dude was just awesome.
I'd give it a watch if you're a Madden fan and want to know the history on it/behind the scenes look into development and the start of EA sports.

Jumped around a little too much I didn’t care about the current day propaganda crap and them discussing who would go on the cover that was fake …..but…man I’ll never forget the Christmas I got a Dreamcast with NFL 2K, that was such a huge step up from any football game I’d ever played. Damn shame EA has a monopoly on NFL games
Do they go into detail about them getting exclusive rights? I haven’t finished yet

yes
As someone who grew up in that age and was not their target audience (sports don't pay my bills, why should i pay theirs), I love a good documentary, and this one was decent.

NFL2K on Dreamcast
Loved that game, the swim move you got with the left trigger on defense was unstoppable. Used to wreck some QBs with that coming off the edge.

What was the propaganda? Honestly don't recall anything or never gave any thought to there being any.

Yes, mainly in the last two episodes. I think in episode 3 they talked about Playstation "GameDay". And how they didn't even release a Madden 96 to compete with it. But that was never really much of a competitor.
The main discussion about exclusive rights was in the final episode when they went into the competition with Dreamcast and 2K.
Showed some very legit criticism with Madden in that it seems like when they stopped having competition, the quality of their product went stale. Madden 04/05 was kind of peak gameplay and it's been downhill since then or has had very little improvement and how they're trying to get it back to the glory days.

Really enjoyed it, especially seeing Madden's involvement behind the scenes. One thing that annoyed me was when they got really sappy about helping kids live out their football dreams virtually. They acted like they were saving starving orphans.
I'd also like to add, frick EA and their exclusive license.

Did they talk about how they have been phoning it in the last 20 years and that the Madden franchise peaked during the PS2 era? Or how truly horrible EA is as a company to it’s fans and employees?

Yes. They openly admit that 04/05 was their peak gameplay and they are long past their glory days and that's where they are trying to get back to.

No. The main people interviewed were the founders, executive producers, and early year guys that helped make the game what is was. Very few current employees were interviewed.

I've got it on my watchlist, but my only question is, do they show any of the players getting run over on field by the ambulance from the earliest versions? I wish that was still in the game.

They did not. I don't ever remember that, that's hilarious.
But I think the first one I ever played was 95 or 96.

NFL 2K and Madden 03/04 are the goats.

Madden ultimate team is stupid and they should take it out and put all eyes on improving gameplay and franchise/dynasty/road to glory

I swore off EA football games after 2k Football was killed off. 2K5 was such a superior game.
I didn't play another video football game until my buddies talked me into playing CFB 25.

Barry Sanders was such a beast in that game.

96 Madden, I could beat anyone with the absolute worst team. I knew that game in and out. Super Nintendo.
Loved making a player in that game. Took a pencil across 2 buttons and made a RB called Jim Thorpe that ran a hair under 4.2 40yd. Unfricking stoppable
