Jon Sumrall was gaining momentum as the top target. He did not like UNC’s offer and turned them down

My source tells me expect Silverfield to be announced Sunday afternoon

Could definitely see Sumrall turning down UNC to stick at Tulane for another year. Next year there should be 3-4 SEC openings which I suspect he would prefer over UNC.

I could see it as well to be honest, but unc hasn’t offered their job to anyone and OP surely doesn’t have some inside knowledge of the search.

No school "offer" a coach until they know they will accept.

But yes, it is highly doubtful that OP has any sort of real insider info. But Sumrall being choice #1 and Sumrall declining UNC to wait for a SEC job next year does make sense.

Sumrall can get a better job. Smart not the take the UNC job. I think he can get a job like Arkansas in the near future

Is that really a better job at this point?

Ceiling at Arky in current SEC is 8-4

Ceiling at UNC in ACC is 1 or 2 loses depending on schedule

Arky could be good in the NIL era. They got coin and a great area. I could see if they get the right coach and get NiL figured out that they could be a threat.

Would be the 3rd head coach in a row poached from Memphis.

Fuentes- Virginia Tech
Norvell- Florida State
Silverfield- UNC potentially

That would be an underwhelming hire IMO

They’ve had success in the past. UNC has never been a legit team. It’s the better job. Arkansas with good coaching is no different in potential than ole Miss. unc is an afterthought

I figured they’d appreciate the awesome outdoor opportunities, nice farmers market, cool coffee shops, etc as I do.

Would hate to see Silverfield leave Memphis but it would be an understandable move for him.

That would be a home run hire compared to that ABSOLUTE BUM Sumrall.

Arkansas has more 10-win seasons and top-25 finishes in the last 25 years.

They've each made one BCS/NY6 bowl, but UNC's was during the Covid year when they were 8-3.

I keep reading every year how good of a job UNC is, but it seems to be based on nothing except the perceived weakness of the ACC. If I were Silverfield, I'd prefer Arkansas.
