Simple Economics Shows Rivian Is a Poor Business Model, Yet Taxpayers Just Gave them $6B

Rivian was just awarded a $6B loan from the Biden administration to sustain their EV production.

Rivian has been in business for over 15 years and still loses $106,000 per every vehicle sold. For contrast, Ford loses around $50K per EV.

I don’t know why tax payers should be forced to pay for Rivian’s failing business.

I know several posters here drive EVs- at least Tesla is self sufficient and has found a way to turn profit.

It was really not smart for Rivian to dump so much money into an EV pickup truck market. People drive pickups for a reason, utility. Rivian lacks the utility of a pickup truck in terms of range, power and reliability compared to a regular gas powered pickup, especially at their price point.

Tesla has proven the sweet spot for electric cars are the model Y where they are cheap and good neighborhood getting around town car or a daily commuting car. IMO that’s the best space for EVs.

It won’t be in the future. They are going to fast track it to rival Tesla and then take away all government contracts from Elon. This is just more Washington BS.

They still don't get it. Elon won the ev war. Everyone else thinks they can just slap a few batteries in some metal with wheels and profit.

I have a friend who has one (about 2 years old) and was going to trade it in for a different truck. He found out that it has almost zero resale value.

It has been mechanically a piece of crap. Always something wrong with it.

Musk had the same business model. All of his businesses are/were subsidized by taxpayers.

Taxpayers were not given a choice.
Biden gave them the money furnished by us taxpaying citizens.

Overpriced poor quality vehicles is a bad business strategy.

Have you been in a rivian? They're nice luxury SUVs and trucks.

My family has various EVs a rivian a Tesla and a VW. The rivian is what I'd consider the nicest of them. It doesn't end up in repair shop often from what I've seen.

I asked the AI about it and it came back with:

quote:

Consumer Reports listed Rivian as one of the worst car brands for 2024, giving it an overall score of 55.

I test-drove a R1T a couple of months ago. My next vehicle is 100% going to be a Rivian.

Once again, this admin cannot do a damn thing right!

And these "LOANS" never get paid back.....so it was a grant, IMO.
