Archbishop of Canterbury resigns over mishandling of abuse allegations

LONDON — The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, announced his resignation Tuesday, days after an independent review concluded that he had failed to sufficiently report, investigate and contain a man believed to be “the most prolific serial abuser to be associated with the Church of England.”
In his resignation statement, Welby said that the report, published Thursday, “exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth.”
Smyth is believed to have abused more than 100 boys and young men in Britain, South Africa and Zimbabwe over five decades, subjecting them to “traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual attacks,” the report found.
Welby said he became aware of the claims in 2013, a few months after he became the archbishop — the most senior cleric in the Church of England and the spiritual leader to 85 million Anglicans worldwide.
Smyth “could and should” have been reported to the police in 2013, the report said, which could have led to an investigation and possible conviction. Smyth died in 2018.

Don’t forget to throw money in the collection plate! Lawyers and abuse lawsuits are expensive!

As opposed to Jimmy Saville, who was most likely the most prolific KNOWN serial abuser associated with the BBC.

Did the assorted police ever take the reports and do follow ups?
I'm surprised the boys didn't follow the lead of some Americans in Viet Nam and frag the aggressor.

the fact that Catholic Church can get anyone to step into a Church again just blows my mind.

Just goes to show you, no one named Justin should be taken seriously.

I'll never understand the church's "mishandling" of shite like this. And not just the Catholic church, but all of them (though the Catholic church seems to lead the pack). But with something as serious as abuse of children (especially sexual abuse), it seems so obvious to handle it properly and on the up-and-up. I assume the reason is that it's so tough to find priests these days, but this shite has been going on for decades+ and the same shite happens. At some point the Church will need to wipe out large chunks of its parts and start over.
ETA: I see it’s not the Catholic Church, but my point still stands as to the underlying theme of not handling child abuse properly.

I could be wrong, but I always thought it had something to do with the dwindling priest population. In the demented minds of the “leaders,“ they felt they had to protect pedophile priest. otherwise, they might run out of priest. They knew exactly how rampant it was, how long it had been going on, and the effect it would have on their ranks if they just started turning in every pedophile priest to the cops.
I came up at a time when there were just enough nuns and priest to staff the Catholic schools, but most were older, and it was clear that they weren’t “refilling“ their ranks. I think in their minds they had to keep as many as they could no matter the cost.

Rates of assault are higher in public schools
That’s not dismiss the homosexual mafia in the Catholic Church though.

You must have missed this one and the SBC's subsequent fully admitting to its veracity.
quote:
In the past 20 years, a disturbing number of Southern Baptists with formal church roles have engaged in sexual misconduct, a new investigation by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News reveals. They were pastors. Deacons. Youth pastors. They left behind more than 700 victims. Read and hear the stories of those victims, and learn the depths of the crimes and misconduct of the church leaders they trusted.
Abuse of Faith
John 8:7 just might speak to you.
For the record, the Catholic pedo priests should be convicted and jailed.
As should the Baptists or any hiding under the cover of faith.
Edited to say I think they all should be taken behind their church and shot. How anyone could abuse children in any way is beyond my comprehension, or any compassion whatsoever for the perp.
