They used to be somewhat decent. You had some home cooking now and then, but this is just pure stupidity.

The good refs are now coaching travel ball teams.

They’re either a pretty good crew or so bad that you have to worry about them getting to the car post game.

If you follow the high school football thread on here it’s because they’re out to punish West Monroe and fricking Chalmette for whatever unknown reason.

Yes.

Had more well refed games than not but the 2-3 bad games they could hardly get the down and distance correct and basics like spotting the ball after a penalty

There’s a lot of good crews out there but They aren’t perfect and have bad nights. People seem to think they spend all their time preparing for what’s essentially a really cool side gig for most of them.

Shortage of officials, which means many people who are officiating big games who probably shouldn’t be.

Plant baws finally finished turnarounds and spent all the money on alcohol and need extra cash when overtime isn’t available.

Would you be willing to spend 5hrs of your Friday night getting yelled at by adults who think they know more than you?

All for the sake of making $150?

Because people are tired of dealing with the screaming from coaches and parents. More the latter.

Downvoter is definitely one of them

Who wants to go out and have abuse heaped upon them by a bunch of idiots in the stands.

Here in north Mississippi they have to stagger football and basketball games to have officials for every game.

I work with a guy who is considered one of the better basketball officials in the area. He says they make efforts to recruit new people but they say "not me man!"

Not surprised.

Everyone should take the same tests and go to the same camps that we do. That would cut down on a lot of the bullshite from fans.

For pennies with the amount of time they are putting into it each Friday night. Football isn’t like the other sports either. Not enough games to actually come out with a meaningful amount of money after the season like there are with baseball, basketball, etc. They are doing it for the love of the game. You and OP should sign up and help out if yall think you can do better. Everyone loves to bitch about it but very few are willing to grab a whistle and lend their help

There are some excellent HS refs in this state, we are blessed. But there is a huge shortage of referees so we have to split days and play dozens of games on Thursdays.

The side judges are usually scraps. Like McDonalds workers moonlighting for some extra money. The real refs actually love the game.
