There are some excellent HS refs in this state, we are blessed.

Talking Georgia?

We definitely are blessed. Felt weird sitting home the 2nd week of November due to the playoffs being pushed back.

But there is a huge shortage of referees

My association is in the process of training current guys to be white hats in 2-3 years due to retirements.

True. Some of it is also due to stadium sharing. The 1st round next week will be played on both Friday/Saturday.

I would disagree it’s for pennies.

I support officials. I have been very vocal in that support publicly.

But to say they are volunteers is inaccurate.

I was pleasantly surprised with the high school refs last night in the playoffs here in MS. We were down 42-0 at half, so it didn’t make much difference…but they called a fair game (unlike many of the regular season ones).

They ran the clock starting in the 2nd quarter…but let our coaches call a timeout with a second left for my son to attempt a 60 yard field goal. The other team subbed their starters back in and we’re not having it. lol.

We have a few in house HS refs that will be here shortly with the tired lines of, “come out and ref a game then”

In all seriousness, we could always use more bodies.

But it's not for everyone.

20 Monday night meetings takes about 35 hours.
7 Saturday morning field training session 21 hours
17 games (so far) leave 430 home 10:30. 102 hours

Film review another 17 hours.

Yeah we get paid….. but do that math.

ecause people are tired of dealing with the screaming from coaches and parents. More the latter.

Coaches don’t scream at me. Fans I tune out completely.

We lucky these guys are even volunteering their time to ref a game
this right here . HBO’s real sports did a little piece on how it’s getting harder and harder to find people to referee given the abysmal low stipends and how much grief they get, people just don’t think it’s worth it anymore to volunteer their time to be a ref

You can do that type break down for a lot of profession/jobs. I never said refs were paid too much or not enough, I simply said they are not volunteers as someone stated.

Before doing the math, make sure to deduct registration fees, uniform costs, non-reimbursed travel, pto usage to go to games, camp costs, etc.

You figure all that in and it's below minimum wage.
