Teachers of the OT: Dealing with Burnout

I enjoy my job I really do, I love teaching, I love those "a ha" moments. However, I hate data shares, I hate PLC, I hate pacing guides, I hate not being able to reteach information I can clearly.see students didn't acquire. I'm debating quitting and moving into a different profession because teaching isn't about teaching anymore. It is about testing, it is about IEP, it is about making sure students pass whether they understand the information or not
I'm frustrated because I have several students who cannot read on grade level, they can't even read in English, yet I'm supposed to have these students at "Mastery" by the end of the year when they can't even read the word "The" correctly.
I'm close to just quitting and calling it an end. I plan on finishing out the year because I'd feel bad leaving the students in the middle of the year but damn this is annoying. Not to mention Salt's being monitored by the state now, the amount of meetings I attend as I only have one day a week free atm, and just general lack of discipline as I can write a student up and they are back in my classroom within 30 minutes.

You’re not alone. I know some teachers who felt exactly like you do and got out of the profession It’s a shame because good teachers really are needed

You can't save them all. Are there pedagogical things you could read about to bring the fire back?

Bureaucracies take the joy out of everything.

I was that way my last 5 or so years…. Did my 25 years and retired … officiate football and work 3-4 days a week with a friends catering business … no stress or pressure anymore . Don’t know how many years you have in the system but state retirement isn’t bad . Good luck

Slide a little bit of g-pa’s medicine in your coffee and see if that helps.

I’m not sure how old you are, but if you’re young enough to start a new career without worrying about retirement and other things, I would recommend that you do it. I’m in my 30th year, third year of DROP, and I can’t wait to be out. When I started, I made $18.8k/yr. and I wasn’t even concerned about the money. The job was fulfilling. You felt as though you were making an impact on young people’s lives. That is no longer the case for all the reasons you mentioned and many more.

This is exactly why dismantling (or at least reducing in scope) the U.S. Department of Education and giving more power to the states is important. And after that, bulldoze some of the state level DOE's.
Autonomy at the school site is vastly underrated. It's one reason why private schools thrive.

Banging students seems to be a popular coping strategy for teachers

Go teach at a private school, baw.

I'm in year 15 teaching, however I'm lucky enough to have BTC as a backup for retirement. So I never expected to teach 25-30 years. However, I'm frustrated especially with SLT this year and the new criteria be to be efficient and proficient. I also don't like how the state can now monitor my SLT data and everything has to be reported to them when the state of Louisiana is corrupt as fricknand not known for great decision making.

I'm not taking a 20k a year decline in pay

Teaching today is miserable in public schools. Teacher burnout is real, and it's always teachers that are invested in their kids education.
I feel for you. My wife retired early because she just couldn't deal with the parents and administration anymore.
Best of luck. Don't make a hasty decision if you are at all close to retirement

Yep. This is why I can’t wrap my head around how normal baws enjoy making fun of teachers.
The bureaucrats and all that comes with it is so hard to deal with.
Then think about dealing with the parents and students in a shithole state like ours.
Might as well be a garbage man or Walmart stocker instead of putting up with the stupidity.

Not a teacher but cocaine fixes all issues baw.

The thing is teachers do the work, however, those in the higher ups get the raise which is ridiculous. My parish the director has received a raise the past 5 years while teachers have received one raise. But we have received 3 stipend during that time which is supposed to offset this.
