Looking for a good shotgun for my oldest daughter to use for her High school Shotgun team. Currently undecided between a Beretta A400 Xcel or a Benelli Super Black Eagle. Needs to be in 20 GA and preferably in Semi-Auto rather than O/U. Are there any other options out there that I should look into?

Just curious: Why the preference for the semi for trap/skeet?

I have a Neretta A400 Xplor 20ga with a kickoff and it's as smooth as butter. Would recommend.

Gas gun with KO will be softer shooting than a inertia gun.

I’m not going to tell you that’s a bad decision but it is.

If she has a gun she can use or borrow the 1st season or so, do that.

An O/U made for trap ends up being much better in the long run. The adjustments help tremendously as she gets experience and grows.
I speak with experience. I was a coach for my son’s trap team which won state this past year.

Could you further elaborate on this for us beginners?

A trap gun has an adjustable comb and typically have 32-34” barrels

When shooting trap, the bird is moving away from you and rising. To lead the clay you would need to be blinded by the barrel with a normal set up. The raised comb, when set up properly, will allow the shooter to keep the front bead on the bird as it’s set up to shoot high.

Also, a browning BT99 is a wonderful trap gun for singles.

Im no pro but its nice to have different chokes for the different type of shots when shooting trap. Some you may have to shoot close then long, or long then close.

The gun that fits YOU best, both 20s are quality. I shoot lots of skeet and clays and tolerate trap. One gun won't do all as thers have pointed out. My recommendation would be a 20 for skeet and clays, set it up to shoot flat or 55/45. Then get a trap gun that shoots high, you will be happier and shoot better. Enjoy and have fun

I like the choke selection option on an ou vs a semi auto

Stay away from any of the inertia guns for this.

I love my Benellis for duck hunting, but they suck with light loads.

Id suggest O/U so you do not have to deal with jams etc..

There really is no one gun that is perfect for all 3 disciplines.

How old is your daughter and how serious is she about shooting? Which discipline is her favorite? My son started shooting competitively in 8th grade and is now in his second year shooting in college. When he first started on the high school team, he just used his duck gun (semi-auto 20 gauge at the time) because we really didn't know if he would stick with it.

The A400 is an excellent choice for sporting clays. Not so much for trap. Remember the kids are standing in a line and as the hull ejects, it will be smacking the poor kid standing to her right.

The A400 is a decent choice for skeet, but if she were to get serious about skeet, you won't be able to add sub gauge tubes to it.

After that first year, skeet was clearly his favorite. We bought him a Browning Cynergy. I felt like it was a good "compromise" gun for shooting all 3 disciplines. It has a slightly higher point of impact vs some others, which helps for trap. Another plus for the Cynergy is that the off the shelf Briley sub gauge companion tubes fit AND the gun does not require trigger work to operate properly with the .410 tubes. It was also budget friendly. I think we paid about $1,200-$1,300 for it. It was dependable and he still carries it as a backup gun when he travels.

For his 11th grade year, it had become apparent that he was in it for the long haul and was going to earn a shooting scholarship, so we bought him a "lifetime" competition gun and an extra barrel to use for trap when he has to shoot that for his college team.

She has been shooting a Semi. She started with an O/U. She prefers the Semi.

She is 15. She has been shooting for two years. She prefers the semi over an O/U. She started with an O/U and shot my nephew’s Benelli M1 Super 90 in 20. She just prefers the semi.

Then you have your answer. Whatever gun y’all choose needs to fit her and she needs to be comfortable with it. After they learn the basic proper mechanics, the rest is between their ears anyway.

Pick whichever gas operated semi fits her and she likes, knowing that a competent gunsmith can add an adjustable comb and butt plate to make it fit her as she grows.

Enjoy the journey! It will be over before you know it.

I shoot a Beretta a400 excel and really like it. Easy to clean and very adjustable. Look at Coles guns in San Antonio, they have all shapes colors and anything custom for the A400

I have an A400 Xplor Unico KO, smooth and soft with heavy 12ga loads, imagine it would be soft as mouse farts in 20ga.
