If you’ve been to Grand Teton National Park you’ve heard of 399. She was the most famous grizzly bear in the world. She was hit and killed by a vehicle outside of the park last night.

My heart is broken!

I've been to Grand Teton and not heard of 399, that sucks though.

Saw some grizz fishing in Alaska a couple of years back on the Russian. A mom and cubs. Mom got hit by a car a couple of months later, then one of the cubs because they kept coming back to the spot. They euthanized the third. Terrible.

First Otis, then 402, now 399......

They do say they come in threes.

Was there anything left of the vehicle?

Grizzly Bear 399 - She's known as the matriarch or the queen in Grand Teton National Park. She's famous for coming out with two, three cubs. And now, miraculously came out with four cubs, which is very rare. That's like a human having quadruplets.

There are plenty more grizzlies in that area. One less isn’t a huge loss.

I went to GTNP for the first time in 2019. The next spring is when she came out of hibernation with these quads. That’s when I started following her. She was able to raise them to the age of 2 when she put them out on their own. If you know anything about grizzlies you know that this is an incredible feat with all of the predators in this area. She was very special. I went back up there this past May and luckily got to see her and her last cub.

PBS aired a special about her a few months ago.

It’s a freaking bear not a human. Hell, not even a dog.

If you met Grizzly 399 in the dark that fricker would eat you in 1/2 a second.
