Historic changes are coming to college sports. The NCAA Division I Council approved Wednesday to eliminate the National Letter of Intent program. The changes come as the NCAA undergoes its most seismic changes to date. The House v. NCAA settlement would permit schools to pay athletes more than $20 million annually, spurring the NCAA and its leaders to rethink their amateurism rules.

Explain this so that the idiots on this board can understand.

Is this going to be one of those threads where half the people are going to say college football isn’t the same anymore and they aren’t going to watch it anymore?

Does that mean there would be a $20M “salary cap?” They would all just find a way to cheat.

Does this mean fax machines will finally be extinct?

So they're trying to make it more unstable than it already is?

I watch less college football than I used too, and it's because players are now mercenaries.
And I'm far less emotionally involved in college football. The excitement that I used to feel, beginning mid-week, is gone, and even on Saturday I'm far less excited than before. And I watch fewer games.
What used to make college football special is now gone. So yea, make fun on people saying they won't watch anymore -- but that's a real thing.

Say what you will about him, but the General truly was a pioneer.

My take is this will leave a void that will lead to player contracts. More structure.

Still a long process to go for approval, but this is the same proposal as the new revenue sharing right?

Yes the NLI program that requires the athlete to attend for a full year will be gone, but they will replace it with a new binding document for school/athlete.
Kind of a nothing burger here

Correct, they have to get rid of the old NLI system to create the new system for signing players to attend school & include revenue sharing payments

I guess you can't call a signing class final until the players are enrolled and on campus.

The unfortunate thing is he is going to be one of the last coaches who gets "sanctioned" for (allegedly) paying players. (I say "sanctioned" because the guy is already back in coaching, after only 1 season away, and thriving). I understand why LSU did what they did, when they did it. It's just frustrating on the back end knowing everyone is legally paying players now and the NCAA doesn't really have much authority to scare schools anymore.

Irrelevant.
This is capitalism. The players have 100% control here because there is ZERO obligation to attend college for sports. The stupid NFL rule about not drafting out of high school would go bye bye quicker a blink of an eye if all the star players said in conjunction that they were not going to play college ball. The NFL only has that rule in place because college is essentially a free minor league for them.
The players hold ALL of the power here as they should considering they ARE the product being “sold”.
