Transportation.

First the railroads, then the airport and interstates. Not to mention it also has quick and easy access to Savannah's deep water port.

I believe because of the railroad and it becoming a major logistical hub for that during a period of growth post-Civil War.

Logistics is always the answer.

Gotta ship cotton to the UK and mills in the north.

Atlanta was originally founded as the terminus of a major state-sponsored railroad, but it soon became the convergence point among several railroads, spurring its rapid growth. The largest was the Western and Atlantic Railroad, from which the name "Atlanta" is derived, signifying the city's growing reputation as a major hub of transportation.

I heard a story how Delta was looking at establishing a hub in the Southeast and it came down to Atlanta and Birmingham. They chose ATL that decision is credited for a lot of the growth ATL has seen

For us, railroads followed by the airport and interstates, made the city into what it is today. Even earlier, Hightower Trail was a major native American trail for going around the Appalachians.

As for the airport, Delta preferred Birmingham, but Birmingham got a bit greedy and instituted a tax on aviation fuel. Atlanta, on the other hand, made concessions to make themselves more attractive, and got Delta.

Atlanta also became known as the city too busy to hate during the Civil Rights era. Birmingham got a different reputation. All of which helped Atlanta become the biggest city in the southeast instead of some other contenders.

If we heard about this all my life. On the one hand I kinda wish the leaders in Bham had not been so shortsighted. But then I see the traffic in Atlanta and I’m kinda glad they were.

Airport.
If Birmingham would have landed that contract you would have seen the massive population/business growth there instead.
